Since July 1998 WAL provides a regular full container service from Europe to West Africa and v.v. under the colours of DAL, after the latter had been absent in this trade for more than 8 years. Following the withdrawal of its former partner P&O Nedlloyd from the Europe - West Africa trade, WAL entered into a new vessel sharing agreement with Delmas. Together with its new partner, 9 modern and fast container vessels are deployed on two routes. The first string (HEBDO I) on a weekly frequency from Felixstowe, Antwerp and Le Havre to Dakar, Abidjan, Lome, Cotonou and Tema. The second string (HEBDO II) is serving Hamburg, Antwerp, Felixstowe and Le Havre in Europe and Dakar, Conakry, Lagos (Apapa and Tin Can) and Abidjan in Africa on a 9 days frequency. Takoradi and San Pedro are called subject to inducement. WAL is offering a fast liner service from the major cocoa supplying countries directly to European main ports. The northbound leg is especially dedicated to the cocoa trade and offers fastest transit times. During the cocoa season Amsterdam is called on inducement. WAL has been awarded 'Star Performers' with the fastest transit times in 1999, 2000, 2001 and 2002 by Lloyd's Loading List, Freightliner and Railtrack. All types of container equipment can be made available to customers in order to respond to their requirements. Door-to-door shipments from the European Hinterland to the main inland destinations in West Africa (v.v.) can be offered at competitive rates. An efficient and well-trained agency network in Europe and in West Africa as well as WAL-representations in Abidjan and Tema are always at the disposal of WAL's customers. WAL is presently chairing the EWATA conference, which was founded in December 1999.
