A versatile fleet of over 150 vessels assists thousands of ships in the world's most prominent and busiest ports. Experienced crews man our tugs of up to 5,400 hp. Operations fully owned or in joint venture are located along the important shipping lanes around the globe. Currently operational in over 25 countries, we continue to grow our business, utilising our extensive global infrastructure and technical expertise as a foundation for operations world-wide. We are specialists in rapidly establishing, commissioning and managing new terminals, often in remote locations, to the high international standards required by this industry. We offer important services to the offshore and onshore terminal markets and are able to provide our customers with a turnkey capability in the operation of offshore and onshore tanker terminals. Key long-term contracts are held in West and South Africa, as well as in the Middle East, South America, Black Sea and the Baltic. We are able to offer our Customers the total human resource package required to cover all aspects of Terminal Operations. We have in place an Indigenous Resource Training and Development Programme. The aim of this programme is twofold - to produce internationally qualified personnel and to empower previously disadvantaged locals. The track record of SMIT Salvage is without parallel. As the world's most experienced and leading marine salvor, we maintain round-the-clock readiness for operations anywhere in the world. Salvage is the first line of defence against marine pollution when major casualties occur. No company has made a greater contribution to the development of salvage capability and thus to the protection of our environment than SMIT Salvage. Marine emergency response at this level requires the experience of dedicated salvage professionals, supported by specialised vessels and equipment. Our full range of engineering facilities and logistics support world-wide, ensures that we can operate effectively at remote locations. Rapidly changing demands and a new emphasis on the care of the environment have encouraged SMIT Salvage to offer special services in the area of environmental care.We are particularly proud of the success of our Pollutant Recovery System (PolRec), which was developed in co-operation with our Norwegian partner Frank Mohn. The PolRec system enables SMIT Salvage to remove bunkers and cargo (oil and/or chemicals) from vessels lying on the ocean floor at depths of between 50 and 250 meters. In the future, additional adaptations to the PolRec system will allow for the removal of environmentally threatening pollutants from vessels lying in depths of up to 2500 meters. The integration of these services into one company offers clients the possibility of liaising with a sole contractor who can integrate all transport and installation activities. Through a SMIT joint venture a fleet of the world's most powerful ocean-going tugs is available for the heaviest towage assignments in the shipping, salvage and offshore industries.
