In the 1840's the freight rates for Chinese tea rose from $10.00 to $60.00, suddenly making it profitable to build and operate ships that looked more like racing vessels than traditional cargo carriers. These new types of ships were called Clipper Ships. They were not a specific design, they were a state of mind. The Clipper Ships ranged in size from a few hundred tons to over 4000 tons. The ships did not only cut down the transit time considerably, enabling the merchants to bring their goods to the markets in record time, they also ensured that the cargo was delivered in a much better condition. Today's "Clipper Ships" are new and innovative vessels of designs that ensure flexibility to meet the ever-changing need of shippers in key and niche markets. Like the Clipper Ships of the nineteenth and twentieth century, today's Clipper Ships bring the merchants' goods to the markets in a timely and safe manner but at a more competitive freight rate. The Clipper Group is an international shipping consortium comprised of Ship Owning, Commercial Ship Management, Trading, Agency, Stevedoring and Investment companies.
