Salling A/S. Establishment of Dansk Supermarked At the death of Ferdinand Salling in 1953, his son Herman Salling took over the management of F. Salling A/S. Having finished a trip around the world to gather inspiration and new ideas, he decided to stake on department stores, stores and supermarkets by chain operation. In 1960 Jysk Supermarked was established, and the same year the first F tex store opened. F tex was a completely new type of store in Denmark and was based on the vision of being able to purchase foodstuffs, hardware and textiles under the same roof. Herman Salling aimed to gain a broad foothold in Denmark, and therefore he began the search for a partner who would be able to inject additional capital. Having negotiated with several parties, he found the right partner in 1964: Herman Salling entered into an agreement with A.P. M ller, resulting in the establishment of Dansk Supermarked A/S. Under the agreement the Maersk Shipping Companies were not to be active in the management of the new company, but they would be preferred creditors in the event of liquidation. That clause was, however, not needed. On the contrary, A.P. M ller could confirm before his death that this particular involvement in trade was running most satisfactorily. Work Horses of the Sea In 1962 A.P. M ller and the Shipping Companies were awarded the concession for exploration for and recovery of raw materials in the Danish subsoil. Among other things, the following years activities required the establishment of a supply service between onshore and the rigs that carried out the practical exploration at sea. As is the case today, the exploration activities were handled by Dansk Undergrunds Consortium (DUC), and A.P. M ller submitted in line with other shipping companies an offer for the supply services. As A.P. M ller won the contract, a new business area was added to its activities. Today, the fleet of supply vessels that serves the offshore oil and gas industry includes more than 60 purpose-built vessels. The First Danish Oil came to Denmark On 4 July 1972 Dansk Undergrunds Consortium (DUC) initiated the first Danish oil production. The event took place on the Dan Field, 200 km west of Esbjerg. In the presence of Minister of Commerce Erling Jensen and shipowner M rsk Mc-Kinney M ller among others, HRH Prince Henrik honoured DUC by opening the taps that allowed the oil to flow ashore. In competition with other shipping companies A.P. M ller had won a contract for transport of the crude oil from Dan, and it was thus the Danish built tanker MARIE M RSK which, on 1 August 1972, could bring the first Danish oil ashore to the Gulf refinery at Stigsn s. Nearly 12 years had passed since A.P. M ller in the national interest had undertaken a venture whose commercial possibilities at first seemed extremely limited. Having overcome many challenges and invested around half a billion Danish kroner, the Concessionaires and the DUC Partners now received the first small repayment of their efforts. Read more in A.P. M ller and the Danish Oil , which is the story about A.P. M ller s involvement in oil and gas in Denmark. Ships data Name: MARIE M RSK Type: Tanker Shipyard: Odense Steel Shipyard Ltd. M ller took delivery of its first container vessel SVENDBORG M RSK. The Fleet s First Container Vessel A.P. M ller s first vessel back in 1904 was named SVENDBORG, and the name therefore holds a special meaning in the shipping company. But for many people the name SVENDBORG will remind them first and foremost of the fleet s first real container vessel. SVENDBORG M RSK had a cargo capacity of about 1,800 TEU. The vessel was originally provided with two Sulzer diesel engines with a maximum continuous performance of 2x34,800 BHP which ensured a speed of up to 26 knots; a significant speed and the highest any vessel in A.P. M ller s fleet could make. The vessel s role in the Maersk fleet was something out of the ordinary. First, she was chartered to a partnership that did not exist on delivery. Then the vessel was chartered out for one year, laid up for a period and after that employed in Maersk Line s timetable for several periods as replacement for other vessels which were being rebuilt. The vessel has changed name several times: SVENDBORG M RSK, SEATRAIN CHARLESTON, CHALLENGER, DRAG R M RSK, BRIGIT M RSK and finally BRIGIT. As BRIGIT the vessel was sold in 1999 after more than 25 years of loyal service in A.P. M ller. Ships data Name: SVENDBORG M RSK Type: Container vessel Shipyard: I.H.I. Aioi, Japan History: SVENDBORG M RSK was named after the town of Svendborg where The Steamship Company Svendborg was founded. At the time M RSK EXPLORER was one of the world s largest jack-up drilling rigs. M RSK EXPLORER The rig that was built to operate in the particularly harsh environments in the North Sea was a so-called jack-up type which, when it is working, rests on its nearly 105 m long legs on the seabed. The drilling rig was one of the world s largest of its type, with legs as long as the City Hall Tower in Copenhagen and a deck area corresponding to four building sites of average size. Its own weight was 8,500 tons, making it the heaviest jack-up drilling rigs ever at the time.
