Møller - Mærsk A/S - Maersk Logistics - Spective; new generation supply chain visibility and reporting solution. Sitemap Home Forwarding services Integrated solutions Information tools Media room About us Contact Local websites Media room News Country features Subscribe Financial news Awards Print version Launched globally on 1 September 2004, Spective is Maersk Logistics new generation supply chain visibility and reporting solution. Spective unites information from every part of the customers supply chain, turning a collection of details into real strategic, tactical, and operational knowledge. A customer driven solution Several years ago we embarked on an ambitious mission to re-design the future of supply chain visibility. The first step was to conduct a survey of our top 60 global clients to gain an in-depth understanding of their expectations, requirements, and hot buttons . It became obvious that the existing concept of visibility (i.e. being able to have the information you need to monitor and control your supply chain through one solution) would need to be re-engineered from the ground up, and then managed by an advanced solution based on state-of-the-art technology. At the top of the list of customer needs were solution scalability, best-in-class integration, security, purchase order visibility and management, event management through alerting, data synchronisation, inventory views, advanced reporting, user-friendly and customizable platform, as well as collaboration and communication through a note (email, SMS or other) facility. So this is exactly what we set out to develop. In View, In Control Spective integrates information from all parts of the supply chain to provide the customers with an integrated overview of their operations. This holistic view of the daily processes helps the customers to make critical management decisions and, as a result, improvements to their supply chain, which translate into faster turn-over from purchasing e.g. the raw materials to selling the final product and, ultimately, increased shareholder value. Through Spective, our global supply chain management capabilities add value in the short and long term for the customer, by providing visibility and supply chain optimisation by: Improving the customers service levels through increased product availability Reducing levels of product sold below margin Reducing levels of obsolete products Reducing order monitoring and administrative costs Reducing handling and storage costs Reducing inventory carrying costs Read more about Spective . Møller - Mærsk A/S - Maersk Logistics - Malaysia - a land of opportunities Sitemap Home Forwarding services Integrated solutions Information tools Media room About us Contact Local websites Media room News Country features Subscribe Financial news Awards Print version Malaysia - a land of opportunities With financial growth and political stability, its strategic location, and a highly educated workforce, Malaysia is reinventing itself as a major world source for electronics and computer parts. The feature article includes following: The country and its people Market situation Political situation Financial development Commercial trends and opportunities Local infrastructure Maersk Logistics Malaysia The country and its people Situated right in the middle of South East Asia, Malaysia is indeed a hub: for centuries, cultures and people have been meeting and mixing in Malaysia, and today Malaysia is a wealthy country made up of a vibrant and interesting fusion of Malay, Chinese, Indian and indigenous cultures and customs. With its 329,758 square kilometres, Malaysia offers everything from modern cities and infrastructure to an abundance of fantastic beaches, mountains, pristine rain forests, and national parks. Direct neighbours are Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand, and Brunei. The population of Malaysia is about 26 million people. The country s official language is Bahasa Melayu. However, English is widely spoken. Market situation Malaysia is gradually embracing ways to expand and liberalise trade and investment including the removal of trade barriers and other issues that limit free trade through TIFA, FTA and AFTA. The country is in the last stages of moving from an agricultural base (palm oil, plantations, etc.) to an industrial base with accompanying immigration to the major cities of Kuala Lumpur and Penang. Combined with improved salaries and increases in costs during the last decade, increasing competition from China and Vietnam mean that the days of rationalising an export base on the basis of cheap labour are over. Today, electronics and IT as well as construction and manufacturing are the major industries in Malaysia. Fast-paced economic growth during the past decade has enabled the reduction of poverty and created an increasingly wealthy Malaysian middle class. Demand for European and American commodities was high until the recent Ringgit devaluation and is expected to decrease for a couple of years, especially with government "encouragement" to "buy Malaysian". Malaysians are very brand and prestige conscious, and often base purchasing decisions on information from close associates and family. Special deals, free gifts, and discounts also have some measure of success in marketing. As the global economy shows tentative signs of recovery, Malaysia has seen its competitive advantages well rewarded in the last six months. There is a noticeable degree of optimism amongst local business and foreign investors alike, seeing a substantial recovery in the Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange's Composite Index, especially in comparison to other South East Asian markets. Part of this was due to a shift of foreign investor's attention to developing Asian markets, as US markets disappointed with a slow recovery. Combined with Malaysia's considerably lower business costs than neighbouring Singapore, and high English skills, Malaysia's economic and business prospects rose well in this quarter. However, this optimism should not lead to complacency. The stock market rise has levelled out and is now in a gradual decline. The good news is that the government is making noises about enhancing English skills by increasing its importance in secondary education, and reducing the level of patronage in the ruling elite and government partners. Political situation The political situation in Malaysia is very stable, and the foundation of the democracy solid. Foreign investment is a high priority, and laws are put in place to promote and accelerate business growth, along with vast government investments in infrastructure. By 2020 Malaysia is expecting to obtain fully developed nation status. Malaysia is a member of: APEC, D8, ASEAN, G7, ATPF, and G15. Financial development The Malaysian currency, the Ringgit, is pegged to USD at 3.80 and, thus, limits financial risks in terms of investments. Standards of corporate governance have improved much in Malaysia since the Asian financial crisis at the end of the 1990s. International agencies as well as the Malaysian government have revised GDP estimates upwards for 2004. While consumer spending is relatively buoyant, it is still trade and export that will underpin any substantial Malaysian development, and much of that depends on a global recovery and import demand from North America and Europe Commercial trends and opportunities During the past four decades, Malaysia has transformed itself from a commodities-dependent country into a major world source for electronics and computer parts. The opportunity for private sector led growth will improve with the government s pledge to conduct its biggest divestment of state shareholdings ever. Foreign companies, and in particular foreign manufacturing companies, looking to do business in Malaysia will continue to be welcomed with the government offering lavish tax breaks and concessions. Local infrastructure The Malaysian physical infrastructure is well developed. Malaysia offers transport by road, rail, air, and ocean and the prospects for the logistics industry continue to be good with a growth rate 2 times the gross domestic product (GDP). In addition, Malaysia s information and communication technology infrastructure has one of the highest penetrations in South East Asia. Estimates forecasts the Malaysian ICT market to grow 8.3 per cent over the coming years with a 2007 estimated investment of RM40 billion. Malaysia is starting to look as a more cost-effective base for operations in South East Asia. Several decisions in recent months by international shipping companies to use Malaysia's Klang port has increased excitement, though Malaysia's plan to position the Kuala Lumpur International Airport as a hub for the region may be overambitious in the face of the location, convenience, and reliability advantages of Singapore. Landing fees and costs have been reduced at Kuala Lumpur International Airport to tempt international carriers and freight. Air cargo traffic in Malaysia is concentrated mostly in the Kuala Lumpur and Penang airports. Port development will continue to focus on improving capacity, upgrading equipment and facilities as well as enhancing the efficiency and productivity of port and port related services, in line with the best international standards. This will provide opportunities in automation and computerisation of port operations, logistics management, environmental management, and navigational safety. There are currently 23 major and minor ports in Malaysia. Containerisation services are provided at Port Klang, Penang, Kuantan, Johor, Kuching, and Kota Kinabalu. The Westport of Port Klang has officially been made a free commercial zone. The Port of Tanjung Pelepas near Johor Baru is the fastest growing port in the region and is moving to become a fully integrated transport hub with port, rail, air, and road transport facilities. Ample storage facilities are available at all major airports and seaports and bonded warehouse facilities are also plentiful. Containerised cargo is the most popular form of inland bulk cargo transportation. More than 90 per cent of passenger and cargo movements are made via the Malaysian highway network. Five hauliers currently undertake inland container haulage and hundreds of freight forwarding agents are stationed throughout the country. International freight forwarding services are available nationwide. The key to the Malaysian market is stability, which has been brought on to a certain extent by the capital controls established during the crisis, including locking in the exchange rate at 3.80 Malaysian ringgit to the US dollar. Also, Malaysians are more receptive to imported fruits as incomes begin to rise with the economic recovery. Some analysts are predicting that the total fresh fruit market could expand 7-10 percent in the next few years. Well-targeted infrastructure improvements, such as the recently completed Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) provides a modern deep water facility in Johor Baru, the Southern most state on the Malay peninsula. Also, the newly developed high tech Westport at Port Klang, the primary entry point for Kuala Lumpur, has further enhanced Malaysia as a shipping destination. Maersk Logistics Malaysia Maersk Logistics established its first office in Malaysia in 1984. Today, Maersk Logistics Malaysia covers all parts of the country from East to West Malaysia. Maersk Logistics Malaysia employs 125 highly trained specialist staff and operates its own container freight station (CFS) at the Tanjung Pelepas free zone just 10 minutes from the North-South going highway.
