Hugh Campbell, Managing Director of New Zealand Milk Russia Xoceco, founded in 1985, is one of the leading consumer electronics manufacturers in China, with a revenue in 2004 that exceeded USD 494 million. Quotes from the project evaluation: Mr. Li Yong, President of Overseas Operation: Maersk Logistics delivered a highquality project . Maersk Logistics truly understood both the consumer electronics industry and Xoceco s requirements . Mr. George Zhuang, Assistant President of Overseas Operation: I felt pleased with your quick responses to our requirements . Xoceco Responsive supply chain to support target 2 per cent share of global TV market By the fi rst quarter of 2005, Xoceco s top-ranking sales fi gures in China for high-value televisions had soared 300 per cent compared with the fi rst quarter of 2004. However, competition is intense and customer demands are rapidly changing. To achieve its ambitious strategy for overseas market expansion, Xoceco called in Maersk Logistics in 2004 to radically re-think its entire supply chain strategy. Together we began the task of defi ning international logistics strategies, both short-term and long-term. The challenge Clearly defi ning the problem Using our insight into the consumer electronics industry, we began by helping Xoceco create a baseline from which we could pinpoint the following key challenges: Long response times to overseas markets Short product lifecycle of high-value TVs Rapidly changing panel prices (0.8 USD reduction per day) accounting for 60-70 per cent of the total purchase cost per unit - complicated by a 8-week sourcing leadtime A major risk of signifi cant anti-dumping duties from various governments About Xiamen Overseas Chinese Electronic Co. Ltd (Xoceco) Xoceco, founded in 1985, is a multinational corporation comprising 6 major overseas subsidiaries and 120 domestic branches. With 5,000 skilled employees and state-of-the-art equipment, Xoceco manufactures and distributes a wide variety of quality electronics including fl at panel (PDP/ LCD) televisions, cathode-ray tube (CRT) televisions, set-top boxes (STB), and other telecommunications products and electronic components to more than 70 countries worldwide. It is the leading fl at panel television manufacturer in China and its PRIMA brand is also fast becoming one of the world s premiere brands. Moller - Maersk Group is engaged in the exploration and production of oil and gas, shipbuilding, industry and supermarkets. The solution Fact-based fl exibility The project focused mainly on reviewing various logistics models for distributing panel TVs (plasma and liquid crystal display), and accommodating rapidly changing component prices and customer demands. The recommendation we presented to Xoceco s top management in early 2005 identifi ed seven digit RMB savings along with a tangible action list for achieving the savings. 1. Short-term solution: Cross-docking of panel TVs, enabling Xoceco to slash 13 days off panel-based order cycle times 2. Long-term solution: Transportation of panels directly to assembly lines, enabling Xoceco to cut 50 percent off cycle times for panel-based orders The results Speeding up cash-to-cash cycles While speeding up cash-to-cash cycles by as much as 50 per cent to drive Xoceco s continuous market expansion plans, Maersk Logistics has gained valuable insights into one of the electronics leaders of the future. Through us, Xoceco has access to best practices and benchmarks from other industries, and benefi ts from Maersk s global presence and signifi cant logistics expertise in implementing and refi ning the supply chain models serving its overseas markets. Xoceco has already begun implementing the long-term solution in Europe and intends to introduce a similar solution in the United States. About TOP-TOY TOP-TOY A/S is the largest toy retailer in the Nordic market. This position was achieved by using the expertise and knowledge of the employees and contacts around the world. TOP-TOY A/S is a holding company that controls the following companies: BR TOYS, TOYS R US (Scandinavia) and TOPTOY (Hong Kong) Ltd. About supply chain development The supply chain development team of Maersk Logistics offers supply chain optimisation from analysis to design and implementation. Our handpicked team of experts combine knowledge and experience within international logistics with best in class analysis techniques and tools, supported by strong project management and implementation skills. TOP-TOY Supply Chain analysis from Far East vendors to Scandinavian stores The supply chain challenge TOP-TOY s largest business challenge is associated with their largest opportunity the Christmas season. As more than 50 per cent of sales take place in November and December, the supply chain is under huge pressure during this period of the year. This, in combination with continued growth ambitions and the target of having a 33 per cent share of the Scandinavian market, has put special focus on the logistics and supply chain performance. For many years Maersk Sealand has been one of Top-Toy s carriers of their Far East imports, and Top-Toy is considered a valued customer in the Nordic Area. By invitation from the Key Client Manager, Maersk Logistics introduced their capabilities within supply chain development to TOP-TOY s management, and as a result of this introduction, Maersk Logistics was asked to perform a supply chain analysis reaching from the Far East vendors to the Scandinavian stores. Furthermore, Top-Toy requested an analysis of the logistics costs and lead time. The diagram illustrates the impact of the Christmas peak in respect to stock levels: COMBINED STOCK LEVELS AT DESTINATION ?? ???????????? ???????????? ???????????? ???????????? ???????????? ???????????? ???????????? ???????????? Moller - Maersk Group is engaged in the exploration and production of oil and gas, shipbuilding, industry and supermarkets. Project scope The aim of the analysis was to visualise the current performance of the supply chain of fi nished goods in terms of cost and lead time and to: Pin point key value and cost drivers Present a cost and leadtime analysis for each product group Highlight opportunities for further review Solution The Nordic supply chain development team was driving the project in close cooperation with the TOP-TOY project manager and the Key Client Manager. Following an extensive data gathering process, the supply chain of fi nished goods was mapped out using the Maersk Logistics MAP*IT simulation tool. In this course all data and assumptions were regularly signed off by the client. Eight product groups were identifi ed and analysed from a cost and fl ow perspective. The key value and cost drivers for all product groups were highlighted. In addition to obtaining a screen shot of the existing supply chain of fi nished goods, substantial savings were also identifi ed within: Direct-to-store deliveries via increased consolidation at origin ports Optimisation of 3PL warehouse usage at destination Migration of FOB point from Hong Kong to ports in the Pearl River Delta As a result of the project, TOP-TOY management is now evaluating a proposal from Maersk Logistics for consolidation and warehousing services in the Pear River Delta area in South China. This solution will facilitate direct-to-store shipments and subsequently alleviate the peak pressure on Top-Toy s own distribution centre. Maersk Sealand has continued the dialogue with TOP-TOY on how to assist them in reducing costs on transportation by changing the FOB point from Hong Kong to various ports in the Pearl River Delta. Meeting customer demand at the lowest possible cost is the shared objective across every industry. But with the rapid growth in global sourcing, managing inventory effectively has become more complicated. In a complex global supply chain, the risk of execution errors creates uncertainty that can result in substantial inventory and lead-time buffers. Buffers are neither cost nor risk free, particularly in times of ever-shortening product life cycles. In the end, excessive buffers can dramatically reduce both top and bottom line performance. Get the complete picture of global product levels Spective s Inventory Management module delivers a new level of visibility to inventory supply and demand across the extended supply chain providing the means for better, faster decisions regarding your inventory strategies. The Inventory Management module offers a holistic view of your global product levels. Failing to detect disruptions can put the overall supply chain performance and your profi ts at risk. As the impacts cascade down the supply chain, resources and assets need to be realigned, often at a premium cost or with a signifi cant impact on customer service levels. Working with real-time exception information allows you to uncover disruptions earlier, minimising cost ramifi cations and improving the timeliness, quality and value of your day-to-day supply chain decisions. The complete troubleshooting toolbox Spective s advanced Supply Chain Event Management (SCEM) module provides fully customisable alert defi nitions and notifi cation tools. Once an alert triggers, immediate action can be taken to address the relevant issue. Proactively solve problems with Spective Spective s SCEM module provides end-to-end process control through proactive and reactive alerts on key milestones, inventory levels and data quality. This is the prerequisite for effective management by exception. Making better use of time and resources Automatic notifi cations of disruptions in the supply chain are defi ned by business rules to alert responsible parties. By automatically targeting the issues that require action there is no need to waste valuable time checking all data to identify a single issue. When an alert is triggered, such as a quantity discrepancy, missing information in documents, late delivery, minimum or maximum level of inventory, you will be able to proactively and rapidly address the root cause. Streamlined supplier monitoring The performance of key supplier and service providers is measured through the use of customised defi nitions and fi lters for businesscritical alerts. You can manage and monitor your entire exception resolution cycle by grading alerts in terms of criticality and defi ning escalation resolution paths. Increased control for maximised margins Spective dramatically increases control and responsiveness to supply chain disruptions. The result is increased effi ciency that will drive your overall supply chain performance and improve profi t margins. Their turnover for 2004 reached GBP 5.3 billion (USD 10 billion). Boots has been a Maersk Logistics client since 1998. Richard Kellam, Import Manager of Boots Plc. remarks: Maersk Logistics displayed an in-depth understanding of the complexity and dependencies of our supply chain. Combined with their knowledge of logistics and transportation they have enabled us to look at our supply chain with fresh eyes. A supply chain needs constant attention to remain effi cient and cost effective. The cooperation with Maersk Logistics has given us the opportunity to optimise our supply chain so that it matches the rest of the business when it comes to effi ciency and foresight. Boots Plc. Turning supply chain opportunities into reality Executive summary With a tailor-made solution, Maersk Logistics helped to solve the challenges Boots faced with their Christmas product supply from Asia. The solution included an increased usage of 45 containers and less airfreight volumes through container freight station (CFS) consolidation and better alignment of supply and demand. Maersk Logistics helped Boots to improve its margin on Christmas products through a better in-store availability and a 6 per cent reduction in logistics costs. The supply chain challenge As the leading retailer of health and beauty products in the UK, Boots sources large quantities of merchandise from manufacturers around the world. In 2002, challenges with the Christmas supply from Asia made Boots turn to its logistics partner, Maersk Logistics, for an in-depth analysis of this particular part of their supply chain. A task force including Supply Chain Development experts from Maersk Logistics was set up. Based on thorough analysis of Boots supply chain, the following key challenges were identifi ed: Due to lack of capacity in its own distribution centres, Boots rented warehouse capacity in the UK from 3rd parties, resulting in additional costs and supply chain complexity It took one week to unload, sticker, and locate products for picking, which the Boots stores considered too long Lack of order visibility from Asian manufacturers/vendors to Boots direct sourcing organisation in Hong Kong made logistic planning diffi cult on the destination side and also led to excessive use of airfreight The approach Maersk Logistics worked in tandem with Boots personnel to establish an as is view of the supply chain in terms of logistics cost, lead time and inventory dwell. The method for data analysis was made through Maersk Logistics in-house supply chain simulation system Map*IT . Once the as is situation was locked the next phase focused on defi ning and simulating and ranking various to be scenarios on the basis of value and ease of implementation. About supply chain development The supply chain development team of Maersk Logistics offers supply chain optimisation from analysis to design and implementation. Our handpicked team of experts combine knowledge and experience within international logistics with best in class analysis techniques and tools, supported by strong project management and implementation skills. About Maersk Sealand Maersk Sealand is one of the largest liner shipping companies in the world, serving customers globally. More than 300 container vessels and more than 1,000,000 containers ensure a reliable and comprehensive worldwide coverage. Maersk Sealand s feeder vessels, trucks and dedicated trains offer a unique concept of door-to-door services. About A.P. Moller - Maersk Maersk Sealand and Maersk Logistics are both part of the A.P. Moller - Maersk Group, which has more than 100,000 employees in more than 125 countries around the world. Besides shipping and logistics, the A.P. Moller - Maersk Group is engaged in the exploration and production of oil and gas, shipbuilding, industry and supermarkets. The solution Maersk Logistics presented following recommendation to Boots: Transport cost reductions through a higher share of 45 containers driven by an increased consolidation in the Maersk Container Freight Station in Yantian. Routing products via the port of Yantian instead of via Hong Kong enabled additional transportation cost reductions Demurrage cost reductions through better alignment of supply and demand, thus leading to less storage days at the port of Felixstowe The implementation and re-evaluation A detailed implementation plan was agreed with Boots. After a series of internal awareness meetings and vendor negotiations, the solution was put into operation during 2003. An evaluation project on benefi t realisation was carried out during 2004. It demonstrated actual savings of USD 18/ cbm in phase one. Once the recommended solution is fully implemented, Boots will have amassed savings in excess of 10 per cent of their total logistics cost. An 81 per cent reduction in peak throughput capacity requirement for their Christmas products has enabled Boots to grow their business without adding additional distribution centre capacity. And most importantly, the in-store availability improved signifi cantly. This has had a positive impact on sales fi gures the number one priority to Boots! Conclusion Maersk Logistics provided practical solutions with convincing cost benefi t analyses both at an overall level and in detail. This made it easy for us to act upon their recommendations. Moving products via Yantian indeed works very well. In 2003 the Christmas products were in-store when needed. The potential for further savings is defi nitely interesting, and we are ready to move on , concludes Richard Kellam, Import Manager of Boots Plc.
