Møller - Mærsk A/S - Maersk Logistics - IBM and Maersk Logistics provide real-time cargo monitoring for global supply chain optimisation Sitemap Home Forwarding services Integrated solutions Information tools Media room About us Contact Local websites Media room News Country features Subscribe Financial news Awards Print version IBM and Maersk Logistics provide real-time cargo monitoring for global supply chain optimisation ARMONK, N.Y., 20 September 2005 IBM and Maersk Logistics of the A.P. Moller - Maersk Group today announced a new initiative to bring real-time, enhanced visibility to global supply chain operations by improving the quality of container tracking and enabling increased security of transported goods. The solution includes highly intelligent wireless tracking devices and an advanced technology network for use by manufacturers, retailers, logistics providers, carriers, and governments to share real-time cargo information. During joint development IBM and Maersk Logistics brought together research, business consulting and engineering teams, along with technology experts and internal specialists in the field of customs, ports and border management, supply chain management and transportation. The solution incorporates IBM's industry-leading hardware and software technologies alongside Maersk Logistics' global supply chain expertise. The organisations have integrated two key emerging technologies for the first time: Intelligent real-time tracking devices, called TREC (Tamper-Resistant Embedded Controllers), which are fitted to cargo containers and designed to withstand the environment they operate in. Unlike typical passive tags that collect data only, the wireless TREC devices incorporate significant processing power, enabling them to instantly receive and send data. The devices automatically collect information on each container, including physical location, based on GPS, parameters such as temperature and humidity and sensory readings to detect intrusion. A fully integrated network that combines data from the TREC devices with a non-proprietary sensor network and business integration system. This network eliminates manual processes, and enables accredited supply chain participants access to relevant data. The information gathered can be connected to decentralised databases where each participant owns their own content, and a service oriented infrastructure allows users to instantly share information. This leading edge solution will provide global supply chain stakeholders with on-demand access to real-time transport-related data. The solution incorporates the new World Customs Organization's (WCO) Framework of Standards to Secure and Facilitate Global Trade. "IBM's objective is to enable globally integrated business by capitalising on the information generated during the tracking process and at the same time improve the security of cargo," said Mogens Roedbro, Partner and Vice President, IBM Business Consulting Services. "This initiative, which IBM refers to as Intelligent Trade Lane, is part of our broader Global Movement Management effort designed to address the critical business functions involved in efficiently and securely moving people, goods and conveyances within and between countries." "Security and supply chain optimisation are key focus areas for our customers today," said Henrik Ramskov, Managing Director, Maersk Logistics. "The capabilities of the TREC device and network eliminate the time lag of the physical container status to provide real-time visibility. This provides new opportunities for truly adaptive planning while also maintaining data quality. This enables effective decision making, supporting supply chain agility. Combined with Spective, we will further enhance our customers' customer service levels while reducing the costs of achieving these." "Some of today's shipping logistics involves enormous levels of complexity, dated processes including lengthy paper trails, and limited levels of security," said James Rice, Director, Integrated Supply Chain Management Program, Massachusetts Institute of Technology. "The ability to create an environment where all supply chain participants have real-time visibility while also leveraging industry standards will eliminate some of this complexity. The IBM and Maersk initiative offers a promising approach for a more truly resilient and secure trans-border supply chain." To ensure the solution is ready for commercial application next year, IBM and Maersk Logistics are currently involving key supply chain stakeholders in a formal pilot. Phase one field testing will begin in early November 2005, followed by a large commercial pilot in March 2006. About IBM IBM's Intelligent Trade Lane improves the quality of maritime shipping services and increases the security of transported goods. This is the first offering to result from IBM's Global Movement Management initiative that is designed to address the critical business functions involved in efficiently and securely moving people, goods and conveyances within and between countries. Through the use of integrated business processes and innovative technologies, IBM is engaging a wide range of businesses and government organisations around the world to develop solutions that improve the flow of information, commerce and travel. Intelligent Trade Lane is an example of IBM enabling businesses to become on demand, and IBM's global effort to capitalise on the $500 billion business performance transformation market opportunity – where companies look to external vendors, such as IBM, to transform business processes and improve business performance. IBM is a leader in helping businesses and organisations innovate and the world's largest information technology and consulting services company. Møller - Mærsk A/S - Maersk Logistics - Australia - Down Under Sitemap Home Forwarding services Integrated solutions Information tools Media room About us Contact Local websites Media room News Country features Subscribe Financial news Awards Print version Australia - Down Under Australia's imports and exports are increasing year by year, and the free trade agreements with USA and Thailand are helping the export of commodities such as pharmaceuticals and motor vehicle parts. The country and its people Australia is the only nation to govern an entire continent and is the sixth largest country in the world in surface area at 7,741 square km. Australia has one of the most stable economic, political, and social environments in its region. This country is well known for its beautiful and varied landscapes and its unique wildlife. The population of Australia reached 20 million in December 2003. Migrants have had a marked influence on all aspects of Australian society. For more than 50 years of planned post-war migration, Australia has seen over six million migrants arrive, including more than 600,000 refugees. Although Australia is an English-speaking country, more than 4.1 million speak a second language. Market situation Australia has experienced substantial export growth in recent years – recording an 8 per cent average annual growth between 1991–92 and 2001-02, and the Australian export structures have changed considerably over the past 10 years. Although trade in commodities remains strong, new services and sophisticated manufacturing export markets have emerged. A recent diversification in Australia's export base means that although Australia continues in its role as a commodity exporter, it now also relies on sophisticated manufacturing industries. Japan remains Australia's largest single export market, followed by China, USA, Korea, and New Zealand. Australia expect trade with the USA to increase further in light of the recent signing of a free trade agreement. Manufactures have always dominated Australia's imports. In 2001-02, 84 per cent of Australia's merchandise imports were manufactures. Australia’s main import sources are USA, Japan, China, Germany, and the United Kingdom. Political situation Australia’s system of government reflects both the British and North American models of liberal democracy, but has uniquely Australian features. The federal (or Commonwealth) government is based on a popularly elected Parliament with two chambers, the House of Representatives and the Senate. The party (or coalition of parties) with a majority in the House of Representatives becomes the government, with ministers appointed from both chambers. The political situation is very stable. In October 2004, the Australia people returned the Conservative Liberal Party into office again for their fourth term in government. Financial development The local currency is the Australian dollar – currently trading at approx 1 $A which equals 0.77 US cents, while the GDP was at US$510 billion in 2003. Commercial trends and opportunities Australia has recently signed free trade agreements with USA and Thailand and this is expected to positively affect Australian importers and exporters. The free trade agreement with Thailand alone is projected to boost the Australian economy by at least $A 3 billion. The impact of the USA free trade agreement should be considerably more substantial with officials saying it will eliminate duties from more than 99 per cent of American manufacturing exports to Australia. It is expected that the agreement could increase American manufacturing exports to Australia by $US 2 billion ($A 2.63 billion) a year. Some of those are aircrafts, motor vehicles and parts, machinery, computers, chemicals and wood and paper products. Australian manufacturing exports to USA are also expected to grow, largely in pharmaceuticals, light commercial vehicles, and motor vehicle parts. The agreement includes duty-free access from day one for over 97% of Australia's manufacturing exports to the US, worth $A 5.84 billion in 2003. Short-term business opportunities count strong exports of primary products as well as wine and beverage and frozen/perishable reefer products. Clothing textiles and footwear are some of the major import commodities, and major opportunities can also be derived from servicing the needs of Australia’s large retailers such as Target and Kmart. Local infrastructure The main logistical challenge in Australia is presented by the sheer expanse of the country. While the majority of the population lives in coastal areas, the distance between these main centres is enormous. In 2002-03, ocean transport accounted for 73.5 per cent of the value of all imports and exports of cargo into and out of Australia. Ocean transport also plays a role in interstate trade, however once cargo has arrived, road freight dominates with 80 per cent of the market when the distance is less than 100 kilometres. Road freight is also the preferred mode for time sensitive freight over even longer distances – particularly when alternatives are not readily available and rail is inappropriate for the market requirements of a particular commodity. Rail is suited to transporting container traffic, steel, and many bulk products over longer distances in particular. A large proportion of rail freight involves intrastate bulk commodity movements from the location of extraction or production to the seaport or processing location. Under the appropriate commercial conditions rail is also well placed to compete in the long distance freight market and dominates traffic in the East-West market of Southern Australia but has only a small share of the high-traffic North-South market on the East coast of Australia. The Australian Government published a study in late 2002 examining the likely challenges facing Australia's land transport infrastructure over the next 20 years. Challenges identified included a likely doubling of the domestic freight transport task; the expectations for improved efficiencies to respond to an increasingly competitive international trade environment; the user preference for road transport adding to urban congestion and greenhouse gas emissions; the under performance of rail transport; and the historically short term and single mode focus in infrastructure planning and investment. The agreement between Helly Hansen and Maersk Logistics is an acknowledgement of how Spective will generate substantial value to our clients. At the time of entering the agreement, Helly Hansen was experiencing a number of supply chain challenges such as: Complexity in collating KPIs and performance measurements on key vendors Reduced visibility when performing pro-active management on production milestones Data quality complexity through high degree of manual and random input into non-core systems (excel and other IT applications) Delayed orders resulting in inadequate consolidation and high airfreight costs The Spective advanced solution will initially allow Helly Hansen to capture multiple production processes for products shipped to their European market. This supports Helly Hansen’s objectives of reduced time to market and increased visibility on production milestones such as ‘raw materials ordered’, ‘raw materials quality inspection’, ‘container stuffed at origin’, ‘container departure’, ‘container arrival’ and ‘goods collected.’ About Helly Hansen Helly Hansen is a global company, headquartered in Norway, and is represented in more than 20 countries, with more than 500 individual product lines for men, women, and children. It provides technical clothing for work and action sports, for all seasons. For 125 years Helly Hansen has been at the forefront of product development and innovation. Since 1877, when sea captain Helly Juell Hansen made his first oilskin waterproof jackets, the company has pushed the boundaries of fabric technology.
