Bulk Carrier - A ship especially fitted for transport of bulk. Bunkers - Description of a ship s fuels, typically oil. Cable-layer - A ship specially constructed for the laying and repairing of telegraph cables across oceans. Chemical Tanker - A ship transporting chemicals. Product Tanker - A ship transporting refined oil products. Reefer - Ship transporting refrigerated and frozen goods. Ro-Ro Ship - A ship where the cargo is driven on board and ashore, i.e. by means of lorries or other special vehicles. Salvage and Tug ship - A ship helping other ships in and out of ports and when salvage is required. Stand-by/Safety vessel - A vessel working as a stand-by safety, fire fighting and waste disposal vessel in the offshore industry. Tanker Market - Transportation of liquid cargo on board ships in free trade, typically chartered for single trips (trip charter). Time Charter - A shipping line lets or leases a ship complete with crew for a certain period of time. Tramp - A ship which will call at any port to carry whatever cargoes are available. Trip Charter - The time charter of a ship for one specific trip, rather than for a period of time. Also occasionally to mean a voyage charter. Supply Ship - A ship working in the offshore industry for the carriage of stores and equipment, towing and anchor handling. Worldscale - A widely used scale by means of which tanker freight are quoted. Its purpose is to enable shipowners to compare more easily the returns on alternative voyages. Table 2.7 The total number of ships deviate in table 2.7 from for instance table 2.1 as Lloyd s Register uses a more narrow definition for merchant ships than the Danish Shipowners Association uses in its records. It means that a number of specialized ships are included in the Danish Shipowners Association records while they are not included in the records of Lloyd s Register. Tonnage-wise, there is in reality no difference, as only smaller ships are involved. Table 2.7 - 2.9 Tables 2.7 and 2.9 are inclusive merchant ships of 100 GT and above. Table 2.8 is inclusive merchant ships of 1,000 GT and above, which explains the difference in numbers of vessels and tonnage. In table 3.5 and 3.7 only ships with known tonnage are included. Table 4.2 The regional distribution is based on reports from Danish shipping companies. Table 4.3 A current revision of figures will take place. Table 4.4 The information only includes earnings and expenses regarding shipping operations. The turnover has been calculated exclusive of VAT and other duties. Earnings from passenger transportation include transport of motor vehicles, earnings from the restaurants include shop sales. Earnings from offshore operation are calculated as net figures. Expenses are calculated exclusive of VAT, and obtained discounts have been deducted. Direct operating expenses include loading and unloading together with expenses for canal passage, port charges, customs and ship charges. Crew and personnel expenses include holiday compensation and board together with various social contributions. Time charter pay is an expense for chartering of tonnage. Other operating expenses are a.o. insurance, repair and maintenance. The statistics concern only the expenses and earnings directly related to the operation and not the shipping companies financial costs or income nor purchase and sale of ships and equipment.
