The East Bound legs from Argentina and Brazil to the Mediterranean was never our worry reports John Eriksen who is in charge of Patagonian Lines active network of European Agents. We were more concerned about the West Bound leg loading in the Mediterranean and West Africa for ECSA . As of 1 st July 2005 , Scan-Trans Chartering K/S Denmark (General European Agents for Patagonian Lines ), officially nominate Messrs. Intermare SpA , Genoa as Exclusive Commercial and General Agents for Italy . At the same time, Messrs. Heestership , Marseilles is nominated as Exclusive Commercial and General Agents for France . Likewise Agencia Maritima Condeminas S.A. , Barcelona is nominated as Exclusive Commercial and General Agents for Spain . The European network of Agents has already, prior to the official announcement, proven to be a huge success reports John Eriksen and continues the July West Bound sailing on m/v Jaco Carrier' is almost fully booked from the Mediterranean to West Africa and Brazil . We have concluded that the excellent start is mainly due to the diligent work of the above Agents, which has reassured us that the choice of Exclusive Commercial and General Agents is a smart move The network of European Agents is an addition to the network of Agents in the Americas which were nominated from the beginning. This network consists of Scan-Trans Inc. , Houston as General agents for Patagonian Lines in the Americas together with their Exclusive Commercial and General Agents; Plate Trade , Buenos Aires for Argentina and Scan-Trans Brazil , Vitoria handling the Patagonian Lines activities in Brazil. Patagonian Lines operate a fleet of geared multipurpose tween- and tripledeckers suitable for a variety of cargoes and commodities such as granite, steel products, palletized and unitized cargo as well as plant and project cargoes. Click here for new details Visit at Headquarter August 2005 At the Headquarter of Scan-Trans group they made a quick decision when one of their vessels was in their "backyard". The mv Amalie Scan had been in Trelleborg Sweden to load Mobile Elevating Gangways to be discharged at the cruise terminal in Miami Florida. A receiption was quickly arranged and family, friends and customers were invited to have a look at the vessel. At the same time a "naming ceremony" of the Amalie Scan took place. This involved Amalie Bonnesen, the young daughter of Scan-Trans managing director Lars Bonnesen . On her way to Naestved the vessel had to pass through the narrow Karrebaeksminde Bridge with only a couple of meters to spare - this, and the very heavy current against, made it somewhat tricky for the pilot onboard. The picture on the right shows m.v. Amalie Scan passing Karrebaeksminde Bridge. Version to print Ship Owners Ship Managers Ship Operators Ship Brokers Ship Agents Project Heavylift IMO Military Equipment RORO Breakbulk Bulk Scan-Trans WorldWide - History History Founders/Principals History of M nsted Chartering and Scan-Trans Shipping M nsted Chartering From 1965 to 1975, Peter M nsted learned the ropes of the shipping industry, beginning with his apprenticeship at Chr. Verner in Randers, Denmark . He then trained at Renck & Hessenm ller in Hamburg, Germany, as well as SeaCon and Intercar (now Ned Chartering ) in London . Returning to his native Denmark , Peter applied his early, hands-on education with chartering positions in Copenhagen at H. Knop A/S and Bidsted & Co. He subsequently moved an hour's drive south to Naestved, where he became the ship-owning manager of a local consortium with a combined fleet of 16 modern vessels. In 1975, Peter decided it was time to chart his own course and established M nsted Chartering K/S in N stved. Since that time, M nsted Chartering has been active in virtually every aspect of the shipping industry, including general worldwide chartering of consignments ranging from coasters to Panamax, RO-RO and reefer chartering , as well as the sale and purchase of vessels. Within the industry, M nsted Chartering has become synonymous with the safe and reliable transport of IMO-classified material, defense equipment, arms and ammunition, explosives, tanks, and aircraft the kinds of goods and materials that only an experienced, knowledgeable, and trusted company can handle. As such, M nsted Chartering has served most major merchants, traders, and government bodies around the world, incl. organizations such as the Military Sealift Command (MSC), United Nations (UN), Ministries of Defense (MODs), Armed Forces, GHQ's, Norinco/Nocinco, Roosnavorisk, GIAT, and Arianne-Consortium (fuels for rockets), among others. In addition to its stature within the IMO-classified community, M nsted Chartering has earned a reputation for first-class service and reliability as well as rewarding its clients' bottom-line in the project/heavylift market, and acts as the sole chartering agent for Compass Int. Ass. Ltd, operators of a variety of vessels suited for project cargoes, heavylift consignments and the parceling of dangerous and delicate goods. Always an innovator, M nsted Chartering realized early on the advantages advanced IT and communications systems provided for its operations and customers and has been a pioneer in the use of the Web, e-mail, and Comtext, among others. Scan-Trans Shipping Partners Lars Juhl and Lars Bonnesen opened Scan-Trans' first office in Singapore in 1993, and after a period of steady growth, moved its Project Department to Kuala Lumpur , Malaysia. Almost simultaneously, Scan-Trans opened an office in Beijing , China to serve the vast ' Project ' market and to act as the protecting agents for European owners and operators. In 1997, the Singapore operation, which had been focused on dry bulk cargoes, was sold to a Norwegian concern, and Scan-Trans Malaysia became the company's regional headquarters. Since the merger of Scan-Trans and M nsted Chartering . The Scan-Trans organisation has opened numerous other offices and become agents for several succesful shipping lines. Peter displayed his entrepreneurial talents early, as a 'paper boy'. He graduated from High School and immediately went into commercial school combined with apprenticeship in shipping. An avid yachtsman, Peter has sailed the Baltic Sea, North Sea, Caribbean, Asia and South Indian Ocean with his wife Kirsten. At land his devotes to tennis, badminton, skiing and occationally funsports like waterskiing, horseback riding, with forays into parachuring, paragliding, hot-air-balloon flying etc. He is an Honorary Consul of Germany, and on the Boards of Nordea A/S (the largest banking group in Scandinavia), BRF (Building society) as well as various commercial enterprises. Past president of Rotary and the Junior Chamber and very active in Youth-Exchange programs. Speaks fluent German as well as English and Scandinavian languages. Peter is active in other lines of business: investing also in real estate developments, IT-Business, restaurants, and factories, among others. He was a partner in Volvo Car/Truck distribution in Denmark . Peter's fascination with travel extends beyond the sea: he has been a long-time "Easy Rider", a motorcyclist along with the rest of his family, including his wife Kirsten. Peter's family philosophy is "mutual support". His wife Kirsten has been the M nsted Chartering/Scan-Trans Chartering controller from the company's inception in 1975, his older son Christian is now a partner in the firm, and his younger son, Jesper, is the firm's backend IT supporter/manager. Lars Bonnesen Married with Pia since 1997, 2 children Caroline and Amalie. 1993 was a telltale year for Lars (24 years old). He co-founded Scan-Trans in Singapore together with Lars Juhl - the same year Lars went to Cambodia together with his American agent in Thailand, they escaped from a renegade Khmer Rouge soldier between the Cambodian capital city of Phnom Penh and Port Sihanoukville, a distance of about 350 kilometers and, as Lars describes it, "the journey of a lifetime". Training began with J. Poulsen Shipping, Denmark 1989 for 2 years, where after he moved to Stiegler Shipping in Mobile, USA for another 2 years from 1991-1993. 1993-1996 Chartering Manager at Singapore, 1996-1998 Managing Director of Scan-Trans Malaysia. 1997 Lars and his partner merged with M nsted Chartering Denmark . In 1998 Lars went back to Denmark and took up the position as Director and Chartering manager of Scan-Trans Denmark . Lars is a dedicated sports freak, his priority is soccer which he is still playing at 'oldboys' level. Much time is spent on training his 2 Viszla hunting dogs as well as going hunting both in Denmark as well as abroad. He considers himself a "110 percent player" Lars Juhl The inside story on LJC is that behind the buttoned-down look and pragmatic business plans, always buckle up because he likes fast cars and was a 'one-day' wonder at Formula One racing (ask him about the "Tour de Sweden"). Lars sense of style may come from the year he spent in the late 80's at Blazer PLC, an exclusive men's wear shop in London . His knowledge, however, of the shipping business comes from one and a half decade of experience. He started as a shipbroker apprentice in Copenhagen (with Elite-Shipping I/S) on his way to becoming the managing director of Scan-Trans, which he co-founded in 1993 with Lars Bonnesen in Singapore. A sports enthusiast (Triathlon, snow skiing, scuba diving etc) and hunter, Lars is married to Diana and has two "Danish-Texan" sons (Gustav born in Houston in 2002 and Christopher born in Houston in 2003) with another child expected in January 2006. In 2001, Lars set up Scan-Trans Americas office in Houston . Here he served as President till end 2003, at which time Lars and family moved back to Denmark . Lars serves as Director of Scan-Trans Denmark and as a member of the board in Scan-Trans Holding A/S. Christian M nsted Like father like son, Christian has learned the shipping business the old-fashioned way - first-hand. Following High School and Commercial College, Christian completed an apprenticeship with J. Poulsen A/S, Denmark . He then spent three years in Scan-Trans Kuala Lumpur Office, where he was a part of the chartering team and a director. In 2001, Christian returned to Denmark and became a partner in Scan-Trans, taking over his father s shares and responsibilities within the shipping group. Christian and his wife Christina also enjoy traveling very much, and would never miss a skiing vacation together with family or friends. Whether biking to the office, working out at the gym or playing badminton, Christian makes fitness part of his daily life. He is also a hunter and joins the partners in the hunt , whether that takes them to the surroundings of N stved or abroad. Version to print Ship Owners Ship Managers Ship Operators Ship Brokers Ship Agents Project Heavylift IMO Military Equipment RORO Breakbulk Bulk Scan-Trans WorldWide - Profile History Founders/Principals Scan-Trans: History, Founders and Principals Perhaps the sea is in our genes. Our company originated in 1975 in Denmark , a country surrounded by the sea and the launching point for many of the early Viking ships. Although the Vikings' strength and ferocity has been well publicized, they were also Europe's first, modern trans-continental merchants, using vessels appropriate for the tasks at hand, whether military or mercantile. At a time when there were few maps, the Vikings first-hand experience gave them invaluable knowledge of the territory. Scan-Trans Shipping has followed a similar philosophy, practicing our trade by gaining first-hand knowledge of our ships, cargoes, and the routes in and out of our ports of call. We adhere to the insight provided by the father of the modern American submarine force, Admiral Hyman Rickover, who observed: The devil is in the details. That's why we master them. Scan-Trans is the fusion of two companies: M nsted Chartering and Scan-Trans Shipping, each of which developed a reputation for first-class service and profitability within their specialities prior to their merger. M nsted Chartering Scan-Trans Shipping Founders and Principals Version to print Ship Owners Ship Managers Ship Operators Ship Brokers Ship Agents Project Heavylift IMO Military Equipment RORO Breakbulk Bulk Scan-Trans WorldWide - Specialities Specialities Specialities : Chartering , Project/Heavylift , and Dangerous Cargo With over three decades of experience, Scan-Trans has earned a worldwide reputation for Chartering , Project/Heavylift , and the transport of Dangerous Cargo , including hazardous goods, nuclear, and military equipment. Chartering For more than three decades, Scan-Trans has handled virtually every aspect of worldwide chartering of consignments ranging in size from coasters to Panamax and Capesize. Project/Heavylift This is Scan-Trans' pride and joy, the "specialty of the house", so to speak. Project cargo and heavylift consignments require the utmost attention to safety, speed, and reliability. Even the slightest damage or delay can seriously impact a project . Consequently, we have decided, circumstances permitting, to use smaller box-shaped Multi-Purpose tweendeck/heavylift ships, enabling us to avoid the many calls at intermediate ports that can extend the duration of the voyage and cause serious problems for clients. Windmills In todays rapidly growing market for wind energy, Danish producers have managed to stay on top of the game, thus creating a large export of equipment from Denmark . Scan-Trans has followed this development, and successfully carried numerous shipments of towers, generators, hubs and blades for the forwarders and producers. Floating Cargo Scan-Trans has extensive experience with cargo requiring water-to-water, lift-on-lift off service, and the more sophisticated float-on/float-off service utilizing semi-submersible ships. Such cargo includes mono-hull vessels, submarines, and drilling rigs/platforms, among others. Similarly, we have arranged for the transport of yachts and catamarans around the world, from Rio de Janeiro to Miami. In and out of the Middle East. From Central America and Northern Europe to the Mediterranean. Within the Far East and Southeast Asia. Literally, the world over. RO/RO If you need roll-on/roll-off ( RO/RO ) services for commercial, military or dangerous/delicate cargoes, we have a variety of ways to serve you. From our positions , note that we have within our fleet four RORO/LOLO/HEAVYLIFT-vessels: THOR SCAN , SCAN TRADER, PROJECT FEMCO, and PROJECT WORKSHIPS (see Pos-List ), as well as various units on T/C for specific operations. RO/RO cargoes we carry include trucks, trailers, heavy equipment/machines, cranes, and military tanks, among others. Railway Equipment Whether you need single shipments or large-scale contracts anywhere in the world, you can count on us. We have extensive experience with the following: Locomotives Railcars Bogies Dangerous Cargo/Hazardous goods, Nuclear and Military equipment Over the past three decades Scan-Trans, under the auspices of M nsted Chartering , has earned a reputation for the safe, reliable transport of IMO-classified material, defense equipment, arms and ammunitions, explosives, tanks, missiles, and aircraft. Whether we move U.N. military cargo from Somalia to Korea, or classified materials into and out of the Middle East, we provide our principals -- producers, governments, and defense departments alike -- the services they require. Our experience has schooled us in the delicacy of this trade. We work with masters and crews who not only know how to handle the material but also understand and appreciate flexible solutions throughout the process, whether in documentation, in port, or at sea. IMO Classified For IMO-classified materials, we typically use modern Danish coasters ranging from approximately 600 tons to 8000 tons. As required, vessels are fully IMO-compliant, and fitted with smoke detectors, CO 2 fire retardants, and requisite safety equipment. Likewise, we observe the special requirements regarding the lashing and securing of cargoes, compatibility of various commodities, and the special situations at various ports of call regarding cargo handling, bunkering, or other transit arrangements and restrictions. In addition, we pay careful attention to the proper handling of all documents. We are particularly careful to take the appropriate steps to avoid problems with authorities, including possible seizure and/or arrest, as well as undesired visibility in public media. As with our other businesses, we arrange, whenever possible, for the most suitable combinations of cargo, enabling us to hold down expenses. We are also careful to do what is needed up-front to avoid disputes on charter contracts, cognizant of cases where owners took advantage of charterers and shippers who did not observe all the necessary formalities and agreements. This enables us to avoid paying dead-freights and unrealistic 'extras'. Our Clients include: World-wide producers, traders, and importers Government bodies & Defense Organizations Nuclear and Radioactive We also have considerable experience handling nuclear and radioactive materials. For these specialities , simply contact the head-office in Denmark or our Houston office so we can discuss our past project work as well as your needs. Dry Bulk We cut our teeth handling dry bulk cargo and break bulk commodities such as pipes, coils, steel products, foodstuffs, timber, bagged/bulk sugar, chrome ore/iron ore, rice, grain, aggregates, and sulfur etc. We continue to do a sizable business in this market. The Dubai and Houston Offices are our centers for bulk cargoes. Sale and Purchase While not specialists, we are experienced in this areas and will gladly look at any specific firm and exclusive requirement you may have. We have executed a reasonable number of sales, including RORO/ROPAX/FERRIES. If at all possible, we will locate available units, matching your specific firm requirements. We are distinguished not only by what we do, but how we do it. Here are just a few examples of the Scan-Trans Way : State of-the-Art Technology = Real-Time Information Whether you are a Scan-Trans customer or simply looking for the most up-to-date information on rates, ships' positions , or global distribution, our resources are available to you. Our state-of-the-art information technology enables us to provide you with information that is as accurate as the sources. In today's competitive world, Charterers and Forwarders often need just a freight idea/indication for a specific project , but it can be tough to get quotes from Owners and Operators. Not with Scan-Trans. We are ready to provide this to you, even if only 1 of 10 indications might lead to business. If you feel we're not getting back to you quickly enough, grab the phone. We should be able to give you a rough indication on the line. Clients having cargo onboard one of our vessels may be given access (login and password) to our website, where we display the vessel's actual position in real-time as well as the route, speed etc. You always know where your goods are and their ETA. Innovative Parceling and Business Savvy (Co-opetition) Obviously, your priorities are our priorities and mandate the way we handle your shipping needs. As your business partner, whether on a long-term or a project basis, your business becomes our business. Unlike other entities, we will take positions ourselves, so that if, for instance, we see an opportunity to get better rates by packing other shipments on vessels, we will arrange that, to the extent that we do not violate agreements on head cargoes. This sometimes means chartering vessels from owners we have competed with for a given project or cargo. Having 'won' the competition obviously means that we have been able to give the client a better deal than the vessel's head owner. Creatively combining cargoes means better deals for all. Competition + cooperation = co-opetition. That equates to business success for all concerned parties. We Know the Territory Better than the Map Scan-Trans personnel know the business because we live it. We are a hands-on organization, working with you not just in offices or over the phones or via the Internet, but wherever your goods are, whether that's on the dock, on-board ship, or in the air.
