No visit to the Channel Islands is complete without experiencing the unique atmosphere to be found nine miles off the coast of Guernsey, on the tiny feudal isle of Sark. No cars. No rush. No worries. After a pleasant 45 minute boat trip (the only way to get to Sark), past the other small islands of Herm, Jethou, and Brecqhou, you will soon discover why Sark is often described as being 'somewhere back in time'. The only motor vehicles allowed on Sark are tractors and, indeed, tractor buses transport people from the harbour up to the village. From there you can set off on foot, hire a bicycle or take a horse and cart to explore this fascinating island, which has only two policemen, one postbox and the smallest prison in the world! Sark is truly unique. It retains a feudal constitution which dates back to the reign of Elizabeth 1. The hereditary ruler is The Seigneur, currently Michael Beaumont. Sark has its own government. It is also home to 550 residents. Sark is actually two islands, Great Sark and Little Sark, which are joined together by an isthmus, called La Coupee. This structure, which offers magnificent views, was widened and rebuilt by German prisoners of war after the Occupation of World War II. Among the many other places of interest are La Seigneurie, the home of the Seigneur, and its delightful gardens, the pottery and the glassworks. Sark is not a place for visitors seeking the bright lights and hectic nightlife - it is a natural and tranquil haven for people who wish to enjoy beautiful walks, breathtaking scenery and a refreshing break from the modern world. St. Peter Port is Guernsey's main harbour and has a good close anchorage, capable of accepting cruise ships ranging in size from the small expedition type ships carrying in the region of 100 passengers, up to the large 'Vision of the Seas' type vessels, carrying 2500 plus passengers.
