The Institute Shipping Economics and Logistics (ISL) is one of the leading research and consulting institutes in Europe. In the four departments Logistics Systems, Maritime Economics and Transport, Information Logistics and Planning and Simulation Systems, the staff members work together in interdisciplinary project teams, well equipped with modern instrumentation in practice oriented research and development projects. ISL has one of the worldwide largest libraries, which serves as a leading centre for maritime information and documentation, provides client related information services and publishes statistical market analyses since more than 40 years. In the following areas analyses and consultancy services are offered for companies of the complete logistic sector and especially the maritime economy as well as for federal ministries, local authorities and the European Commission: Logistics Systems (Prof. Dr. Hans-Dietrich Haasis): strategic business concepts; supply chain management; value added product systems; elaboration and organisation of macro logistical systems; system integration of intermodal transport; configuration and coordination of regional networks and freight villages. Maritime Economics and Transport (Prof. Dr. Manfred Zachcial): Market observation and market analyses for the maritime economy; scientific advice of politics and economy; traffic forecasts, modelling of land/sea transport, transport planning; feasibility studies for ports and eCommerce developments, Economic Impact Studies. Information Logistics (Dr. Frank Arendt): Concepts and implementation of information and communication technologies in the transport industry; software applications for modal (truck, rail and vessel) and intermodal transport management covering order processing, resource management, accounting, and tracking and tracing; web-based applications, e.g. for intermodal tracking & tracing, and tariff enquiries; intra- and inter-company networking of information using EDI and XML, eBusiness and eCommerce applications; set-up and support of local networks and their secure connection to the internet. Planning and Simulation Systems (Prof. Dr. Carsten Boll): Research and development of quantitative methods (operations research models) for the transport industry; development and application of simulation systems to support the strategic planning process of complex logistic chains and transhipment plants as well as to optimise the operation of short term logistic processes; national and international consulting for harbour planning; transhipment and warehousing projects; extension and operation of a competence centre of eLogistics.
