Hamburg-Amerikanische-Packetfahrt-Aktien-Gesellschaft, or HAPAG for short, was founded on 27 May 1842 by some businessmen and ship-owners from Hamburg. Norddeutscher Lloyd, the other of the two companies which comprises Hapag Lloyd, was founded 10 years later in Bremen. In the past Norddeutscher Lloyd became the pride of maritime trade, determining the course of the world maritime sector, setting the market standards and encouraging its rivals to develop in commercial shipping. After a century of ups and downs, it discovered container transportation in 1966. Hapag and Norddeutscher Lloyd realized that, despite the high costs, this new transportation system was highly efficient and, in addition to the large-scale investments required in order to keep pace with this innovation, merged the two companies to form Hapag-Lloyd on 1 September 1970. Today Hapag-Lloyd is a global logistics company offering transportation services all over the world with a broad range of services and a history of 155 years.
