The Port of The Port of Vigo is placed in the North-Western side of Spain, 45 miles south away from the Winter North Atlantic line. This privileged location allows the Port to extend its influence in Galicia, North Portugal and Castilla, acting as a link with the main international ports and registering more than two thousand vessel calls a year. Location: 42?15'N 08?43'W The Port of Vigo is connected to its hinterland with a wide network of infrastructures: highway, road, rail and airport, which offer the speed and efficiency goods traffic demand. It is located in the center of the axial motorway: A Coruna (Spain)/ Oporto /Lisboa (Portugal). Therefore, in 1998 Vigo reached an outstanding improvement in its land accesses when the high speed road to the inland (Madrid) and the Rias Baixas motorway were inaugurated. Peinador, Vigo airport, is only fifteen minutes away by car from the port, offering several daily flights to Madrid, Barcelona, Bilbao and Paris, which allows a connection with other airports, national and international. Santiago de Compostela airport is 50 minutes away by car from the Port of Vigo. This airport is connected to European capitals and Canary Islands. Due to its excellent natural entrance and shelter conditions, offered to ships calling at Vigo Bay, as well as its geographical situation on the routes to America and Europe, the Port of Vigo is one of the main european ports of call for the traffic of goods. Therefore, the Port of Vigo is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Having achieved during the years 2000, 2001 and 2002, an absolute historical record of goods traffic, it seemed that the year 2003 would not break the level of traffic reached before. However, and even with the recession of the world economy, our port has overcome again the high level reached last year. Besides this new absolute historical record of the traffic we may emphasize the following events of the year 2003: - The works of enlargement of our ferry terminal in Bouzas has been going on at a good rate. This will allow meeting the ro-ro traffic that, once more last year has meant more than 1.000.000 Tons. This enlargement will turn our ro-ro terminal in one with more storage capacity in the Iberian Peninsula. - An investment of 150 million euros has been approved and legal proceedings are taking place for the necessary expropiation of 4.300.000 square meters for the setting up of the Platform/Industrial State which will give service to the peninsular north-western ports. - In the year 2003 our Port has been again the first in Spain in handling of fish, standing out as one of the finest ports in the world in fresh and frozen fish as well as in cold storage. This has led us to realize several relevant projects of Public and private enterprise enabling us to increase added value to the fishing in our port. All in all, the year 2003 has been an important landmark for the future of our port, because besides having strengthened its strategic position, it has allowed us to set the bases for the future development of the port. The allowance investments for the next few years are higher than two hundred million euros, and will allow us to confront with all guaranties of success, the demands of quality and service that an extended world wide and competitive world requires from us. Of all these inversions stand out the ones designed to promote the general cargo traffic and tourist cruises, assigned to improved the port-city integration located in the central area of our port. But this would not have been possible without the collaboration of the whole staff and the people who work with this port, and whose dedication and foresight has prove that in spite of all the technology available, the real success must be appointed to the people behind it, as well as their skills. Hence my gratitude and acknowledgement to all. To end, I would also like to express my gratitude to the extraordinary collaboration of other administrations and institutions such as the State Ports, Xunta de Galicia, Vigo Free Zone Consortium and the Councils within the estuary of Vigo, whose collaboration and support have made it possible to reach our aims successfully. THE PRESIDENT, Julio Pedrosa Vicente. The Port of The Port of Vigo is placed in the North-Western side of Spain, 45 miles south away from the Winter North Atlantic line.
