Marlins is the leading brand in language training solutions for the shipping industry. Working closely with the ISF, UK Maritime & Coastguard Agency and the IMO, Marlins seeks to provide high quality and cost effective language training and assessment products and courses which comply with the rigorous standards required by the shipping industry as set out in the STCW 95 convention. Marlins was established in 1994 to provide English language training solutions for the shipping industry. Initial programmes focused on shore-based teaching in the main crew supply centres. With the emphasis for training shifting from shore to ship however, Marlins has developed self-study products intended primarily for use at sea. While much shipboard communication is routine or technical and can be referenced in documents such as Standard Marine Communication Phrases, fully effective communication depends upon the ability to operate instinctively in English. With many more multi-national crews at sea this has become even more critical. Accidents, incidents, emergencies or inspections by their very nature are not routine. As a consequence, a seafarer's knowledge of English must be broad and his communication skills fluent to facilitate an appropriate response as the situation demands. In response to the revised STCW requirements for seafarers to 'demonstrate an ability' to communicate in English, and the increasing importance of shipboard training, Marlins has produced self-study and assessment products specifically for non-native English speaking seafarers of all ranks. Additionally, Marlins consultants provide teaching and advisory services to a wide variety of companies in the shipping industry. Seatec Safety Systems Limited is the sole licensee, on a worldwide basis, of the Marlins trademark. Marlins is the leading brand in language training solutions for the shipping industry. Marlins Ltd.
