The mission of the New York Shipping Association (NYSA) is to represent the interests of its members in maximizing the efficiency, cost competitiveness, safety and quality of marine cargo operations in the Port of New York and New Jersey. NYSA will accomplish this mission by engaging in strong advocacy of the member's interests in the; public, government, and business communities and through: negotiation of fair collective bargaining agreements with the International Longshoremen's Association and the Port Police and Guards Union; effective implementation of those collective bargaining agreements; and judicious management of the various funds created thereunder; close collaboration with other maritime and maritime related organizations with shared interests. partnering with public agencies tasked with the improvement of the region's transportation system; frequent communications with its own members to insure that their interests are well served. Transportation & Infrastructure Significant progress has taken place in 2002 on the more than $4.4 Billion in infrastructure improvements undertaken by members of our Association, the Port Authority and state and federal agencies. The crowning touches have been the delivery of state of the art post Panamax cranes at several facilities. Terminal improvements throughout the 2,100-acre Port Newark/Elizabeth complex are ongoing. However, most significant is the completion of the new Express Rail overpass and roadway improvements in Port Elizabeth. Redevelopment and reconfiguration of the three major facilities is ongoing with full build out expected to be completed by 2006. Construction has begun on major roadway projects to enhance freight movement and traffic flow throughout the port complex. Work has begun at Howland Hook, with the demolition of structures no longer in use and the start of development of those sites as an on-dock rail terminal to support Howland Hook marine operations. Planned in the near future is a terminal wharf extension and berth deepening as well as significant roadway and rail yard improvements. Annually, the construction phase of these investments can be expected to: Support 12,550 jobs in the port region and 20,560 more nationwide. Contribute $584 million to workers in the port region and $468 million more nationwide. Generate state and local tax revenue of $58 million in the port region. These investments will allow us to enhance efficiency as we move the products we import and export through our region. Augmenting the effective and environmentally sustainable manner in which we operate and allowing us to maximize the economic value of having the East Coast's largest port in our backyard. Frank M.
