Port of Paldiski South Harbour - Tallin (Estonia)  (ID: 18603)

Page 1 of 1           [Back to companies list]

Paldiski South Harbour is located 45 km west of Tallinn. Remarkably smaller than its big brothers Muuga and Old City, but fast developing and eager to chase bigger ones. In Paldiski South Harbour the emphasis is placed on ro-ro activity, export of local goods and transit of liquid bulk and metals. Due to Paldiski s favourable geographical location on the north-western coast of Estonia, Paldiski South Harbour has advantages to develop regular passenger lines between Scandinavia and Estonia. The harbour has regular passenger liner connection to Kapellskar in Sweden (one can make a sea voyage from Paldiski to Kapellskar in 8 hours instead of 14 hours from Tallinn). Also ro-ro liners to Hanko and Vastervik welcome passengers on board. A significant growth in both cargo throughput and passenger traffic is expected in the coming years. Due to the harbour s development potential, remarkable proportion of the port s investments goes to Paldiski. As the oil terminal will be enlarged, the planned timber and metal terminals require deep waters for vessels larger than the harbour can accommodate today, the aquatory was dredged up to 12.0 m in 2002, which enables continuous growth of cargo volumes. Development projects under way in Paldiski South Harbour include construction of two berths able to accommodate oil tankers with a maximum size of 50,000 dwt, new terminals and enlargement of the possibilities to serve containerised goods. A new general cargo terminal with an area of 4 hectares is planned on reclaimed land in the western part of the existing port facilities. The 300 meter long berth allows 30,000 DWT vessels to enter the harbour, making the terminal annual capacity around 1 million tons of general cargo A new dry bulk terminal (with a 300-meter berth for 40,000 DWT ships) with the yearly capacity of 2 million tons is planned to the neighbourhood of the abovementioned general cargo terminal.
