Colonia is on the left bank of the River Plate, 27 miles in a straight line NE of Buenos Aires, to which it is connected by a ferry service. It is a popular seaside resort with a casino and has a population of 18,000 inhabitants. Access channels. Of the 3 channels available only 2 can be used by ocean-going ships: Canal de Medio for those coming down river, with 15' depth, and Canal San Gabriel coming from the south-west, depth 12'. Pilotage (Refer to 'River pilotage'). All ships must be moored and unmoored by an Uruguayan port pilot. Free pratique (see above). An angled breakwater protects the port. There are 3 quays in the basin: one is 180m. long, built of concrete with a depth of 15' alongside and is used by deep-sea ships. It has four 3-ton and two 5-ton cranes. Coasters berth at the west quay, which has a depth of 131m. A 'free zone' has been established here and it is used mainly for the storage of imports. (Refer to 'Free zones'). 'Stevedoring' and working hours' (Refer to Montevideo). Bunkers are not available. Stores and water can be supplied. Medical attention/hospital is available. Consuls. Argentine. Communications. Road to Montevideo; a regular ferry service to Buenos Aires and a small airport for regular flights to Buenos Aires are available.
