This is a lighterage port about 30 miles north of Callao. It is situated in a small bay, which is a mile wide, indented about one third of a mile on the coast. There is a bad swell in April and May and again in September and October; it often last three or four days. There is no pilotage. The anchorage is carried out in the middle of the bay in 5 to 8 fathoms and half a mile off the pier head, which has a fixed red light. Chancay Point has a fl. white light that is 55 metres high. The concrete pier is 243 m. long with 16 of depth alongside, and has 1 crane of 13 _ tons. It is used to unload the lighters of explosives destined for Callao. Such dangerous cargoes are not handled at Callao, and ships must discharge them to lighters at Chancay. There are 6 lighters, with a total of capacity 260 tons, a motor launch of 65 hp. there are 3 gangs of stevedores. For security, a maximum of 20 tons of explosives is fixed for each lighter, and the day s work finishes at 18.00 hours. Two factories still produce fish meal, which is sent by road to Callao or Chimbote for export. Working hours are from 07.00 to 24.00 and overtime is charged from 11.00 to 13.00 and 17.00 to 24.00 and all day on holidays. There are no riggers and the stevedore gang does this work and charges for it. Water and bunkers are not available. Supplies should be ordered in advance from Callao, although fresh provisions are obtainable locally. Repairs. There are no facilities for repairs. Medical attention/hospital. Available.
