This is a lighterage port. There is a red flashing light on the mole, visible from a distance of 6 miles. No pilotage. The agency tug usually guides ships in the anchoring zone, which is 1_ miles from the head of the pier, in 5 or 6 fathoms, and near the lighter anchorage. Ships are received and dispatched at any time. The mole is 752 m. long with 14 depth alongside. There are 6 cranes on the wharf, 5 are between 3 and 6 tons capacity and 1 has a capacity of 15 tons. There is also a railway. Packages should not exceed 8.25 x 6.40m in size. There are 12 wooden lighters and 6 launches for towing them. Stevedores. There are 7 gangs of stevedores who also open and close hatches, as there are no riggers. Working hours are 07.00-11.00 and 13.00-17.00. Overtime is 100% extra, 11.00-13.00 and 17.00-24.00; and 200% extra, 24.00-07.00. On Sundays and holidays there is a 100% surcharge. Work is frequently interrupted by the swell. Cargo handling. Discharge to lighters per gang/hour is: cement 25 tons; fertilizers, dried milk and tin-plate, 10 tons. Loading: sugar in bags 25 tons, and in bulk by slitting the bags 20 tons. Costs are about U$S 4 to 5 per tonne for general cargo. Petroperu has two pipelines, 10" and 12", about 1,500 m northwest of the pier in 16 depth for the discharge of clean oil products and loading alcohol. Bunkers and water are not available. Supplies can be brought from Chiclayo. Repairs are not practised owing to the distance from the shore. Medical attention/hospital is available at Chiclayo. Consul. Holland. Communications.
