Page 1 of 1 [Back to companies list]
This is a terminal for loading crude oil from the oil fields and offshore wells in the area. Approach is made through the old pier, in line with tanks to the south, with the pilot on board. Pilotage is compulsory and the port pilot comes by road from Punta Arenas, 120Km distant by road. Towage is obligatory and a tug is sent from Punta Arenas, as well as the mooring launch. Clearance: The Port Authorities come with the pilot from Punta Arenas. Terminal: Ships moor with bows at 232?, using both anchors with 8 or 9 shackles and pass a total of 14 lines, each 240m long to 4 mooring buoys. This berth is at the western end of the Second Narrows and mooring can only be done at slack water, as the alternating tidal current is very strong. Mooring is by daylight only, but unmooring can be at nighttime, at the pilot s discretion, but always at slack water. The berth can handle tankers of up to 75.000 tonnes displacement and 250m loa. The maximum draught is 49 . The tidal range is 5 6 springs. There are 4 pipelines of 16 , 2 for loading and 2 for deballasting. The flexibles are 10 and 8 , respectively; the length of each line is 1.200m from the shore. The pumping station can deliver at 1.700cu. m per hour from the tanks ashore with a total capacity of 100.00cu. m. The deballasting tanks ashore can take 35.000 cu. m. A short pier- placed 2 ? miles southwest of the terminal- has pipelines to deliver diesel, kerosene and water to offshore supply craft for the oil-platforms, and to coastal tankers for Cabo Negro. Mooring and unmooring conditions are similar to those at the main terminal. The terminal uses VHF Channel 16. The company inspector on board uses a walkie-talkie, while he attends to the dry certificate, loading rates, etc. There is no pumping signalling station. Radio contact with agents in Punta Arenas can be made by calling Maritima Punta Arenas on 2182 kHz requesting them to contact the ship on a given frequency, usually 6,218.6 kHz. Water is not available at the main terminal, but if ordered in time, about 100 tons can be brought out by the tug sent for berthing the ship. Supplies and medical attention can be ordered from Punta Arenas. This is a terminal for loading crude oil from the oil fields and offshore wells in the area.
