Pecket is a coal loading terminal in Otway Sound, 170 nautical miles by sea from Punta Arenas and 70km by road. Coal is worked from an open pit mine, ground to uniform sizes and stockpiled. Then it is loaded by 2 shoots onto a conveyor belt that is 1.800m long from the shore to the berth, to be discharged into the ship s holds. Pilotage: It is compulsory and the pilot, if not already on board, embarks near Paso Tortuoso to take the ship through Jeronimo Channel to the berth. Towage: Tugs are obligatory as well as launches for the lines for mooring/unmooring. Berthing/Unberthing: Berthing must be carried out in daylight. Unberthing can be done at any time. Terminal: The berth consists of 4 mooring dolphins set in a semi-circle and 3 buoys, 1 forward and 2 aft. At least 18 lines, each 220m long, must be used for mooring and shifting. The ship berths port side to the dolphins and shifts round them to accommodate the hatches under the conveyor belt coal-shoot. The rate of loading is about 2.000 tonnes per hour. The berth can take a ship of up to 80.000 tonnes displacement and with a maximum draught of 14.5 m (47 7 ). There are no facilities but supplies can be brought in limited quantities from Punta Arenas. Diesel oil and water are available only by means of the tugs.
