Lota is in the extreme north corner of Lota bay which is ? of a mile wide and recedes about 2/3 of a mile. The mechanical coal loading pier is operated by the National Coal Board. The jurisdiction of the Port Captaincy is Coronel Lota. Approach: The Lutrin lighthouse is on the north-west entrance of the bay, and has a fog signal. Anchorage: To await the pilot or if the berth is occupied, the ship anchors 500m off this light, bearing 135?, in a depth of 35 . Pilotage: It is compulsory and the pilot boards at the anchorage mentioned above and shown on the chart. The pilot comes over from Talcahuano, but provided the ETA message has been sent sufficiently in advance, there should be no delay. Towage: A tug of at least 1,200 hp is required for berthing/unberthing, assisted by a launch for the lines. The maneuver must be done in daylight only. Water: It is available at the platform. Bunkers: None. Supplies: They can be obtained from Talcahuano. Repairs: Only minor repairs can be done. Consuls: They can be located at Concepcion or Talcahuano 34 km distant. Communications: There is road or rail service to Concepcion and from there to all parts of the country, combining in Santiago with international air services. Note: The berth is considered a safe one even in winter. With strong winds from the north-west quarter, it may be necessary to suspend loading on account of the swell. This may occur for a total of 15 days during the winter, for periods of 2 or 3 days, consecutively. In bad weather, the Port Captain decides whether to suspend loading or abandon the berth.
