Swansea offers excellent communication links with easy access to the M4 and direct access to the UK railway network. Swansea is less than 3 miles by dual carriageway from junction 42 of the M4 motorway. In addition, as ABP's most westerly South Wales port, its location can be advantageous in terms of reducing sea-feight costs to and from many destinations. Swansea has developed a substantial trade base with North and Western Europe, the Mediterranean and also with Northern Ireland and the Irish Republic. The port s major cargo-handling trade is receiving and shipping steel cargoes for Corus. It is equipped with a wide range of heavy-duty handling equipment offering quayside cranes and a range of fork-lift trucks with capacities of up to 40 tonnes. Other traffics include containers, forest products, bulk cargoes, liquid bulks and general/project cargoes. Swansea Cork Ferries operates a service to Cork, Republic of Ireland from the port s Ferryport Terminal.
