The Marine Museum of the Great Lakes at Kingston, the Pump House Steam Museum and the Museum Ship Alexander Henry offers teachers, parents and volunteers in the Kingston area a wide range of learning opportunities. These range from structured Ontario curriculum based programs, to informal tours or the chance to participate in maintaining Kingston's engineering and shipping heritage. The Marine Museum was founded in 1975. Located on 55 Ontario St. at the only federally built dry dock on the Great Lakes, the Marine Museum houses the original pumping station and steam engines built in 1891.We also have on display a wide ranging collection of marine artifacts, exhibits and archives and are home to the Gordon C. Shaw Study Centre. The Pump House Steam Museum is an exciting place to learn about energy, forces and motion, as well as sound and simple machinery such as pulleys. The Pump House was also vital to the growth of Kingston as a city, and played a significant part in the development of Kingston's public health system and industrial expansion. The Museum Ship Alexander Henry was built in 1959. A Bouy Tender/Icebreaker that also serves as a Bed and Breakfast, the Alexander Henry is a fine example of shipbuilding from the last century. With its twenty ton crane, block and tackle, hydraulic ram and other functional machinery, students have a perfect opportunity to experience science in a real world setting. We have developed new science tours to address the Structures and Mechanism Curriculum Strand: Movement /Simple Machines (Grade 2) Stability (Grade 3) Pulleys and Gears (Grade 4) Motion (Grade 6) Mechanical Efficiency (Grade 8) The Museum is managed by the Marine Museum of the Great Lakes.
