Declercq The first regular ferry link between Oostende and Dover was established in 1846 when the packet boat 'Chemin de fer', a steamship with waterwheels, sailed for the first time between Oostende and Dover. Until then the crossing was exclusively ensured by English ships. The 'Regie voor Maritiem Transport' (Regie des Transports Maritimes) was operational during 150 years in Oostende. The first turbine mailboat with propeller wheel, the 'Princesse Elisabeth' was taken into service. The 'Prinses Josephine-Charlotte' was the first Car-ferry to leave the port in 1949. The jetfoils were taken into service in 1981 thereby shortening the time of crossing drastically. The Jumbo ferry 'Prins Filip' joined the fleet in 1992. RMT ceased its activities in 1997. A drastic port renovation took place at the end of the 19th century. There was a lack of quays which was due to the increased traffic, the arrival of steam trailers and the sharp increase of the length of the mailboats (45 m in 1846 to 103 m in 1893). The provisioning was also a problem which could not be solved within the existing port infrastructure. That is why the city council closed a deal with the State with the sole purpose of extending and refurbishing the port. Henceforth the State would manage all the surfaces of the water and the quays which lay in front of the locks, including the locks themselves. These works started in 1898, which were inaugurated in 1905, although these works were not yet completed at that time. 20th century The port of Oostende played its role in the 19th and 20th century as a fishery port, merchant port and passenger port. Moreover, aquatic sports flourished, sailing and rowing regattas were organised by various watersports associations and the marinas for pleasure crafts were build out. The port of Oostende, for a while, played an important role as a navy base after the second World War with the foundation of the Belgian Navy. This role was gradually taken over by Zeebrugge. Today, the port is focused on the handling of goods and passengers and considers itself as the engine behind the industrial development of the region Oostende.
