With its head office in Reykjavik, the company has regional transport centres all over the country. Transport centres nationwide link up with more than 20 transport contractors working with the trucking unit, Landflutningar-Samskip, to form a comprehensive transport network in Iceland. Samskip offers daily scheduled haulage services between all major centers of population with goods reach practically all domestic destinations within 24 hours. Warehousing and refrigerated storage From simple open storage areas to dry storage and temperature-controlled storage, Samskip offers the right housing solutions. Distribution concepts are developped in cooperation with our customers and partners. Samskip's warehouses in Iceland were the first in the country to receive HACCP certification in recognition of its observance of strict quality standards. Bar coding and electronic recording makes stock monitoring an easy matter and enables customers to check on the status of their stocks at any time. Isheimar, Samskip's freezer-storage center in Reykjavik, is technically sophisticated and meets customer's strictest requirements regarding the storage, handling and examination of frozen food products. New vessels expected In July 2003, Samskip concluded a contract with German shipbuilder J.J. Sietas of Hamburg calling for the construction of two new container vessels. Due to be delivered in February and March 2005, they will replace the existing vessels Arnarfell and Helgafell, which have become too small for the company's purposes. Both vessels will be so-called "green ships," meaning that their fuel tanks will be located in such a way as to minimise the risk of pollution in the event of leakage due to running aground or collision. Each will have a capacity of up to 908 20-foot containers, a total carrying capacity of abt.10, 950 tons. At 137.5 metres in length and with a top speed of 18.2 knots, each vessel will be equipped with powerful bow thrusters and steering gears. Designed to burn heavy fuel oil, the main engines aboard each vessel will produce 8,400 kw of power, linked to powerful generators. Both vessels are designed to handle all standard 20, 30, 40 and 45-ft container units, and will have a minimum of 200 connections for reefer containers. Each will also come equipped with two powerful on-board container cranes. Samskip offers weekly FCL & LCL container service between the Continent of Europe, UK and Scandinavia, and Iceland.
