Port of Indiana - Mount Vernon The Port of Indiana-Mount Vernon (also known as "Southwind Maritime Center") is a leader in throughput tonnage, averaging more than 2 million tons of grain, grain products, coal, fertilizer, cement and minerals annually. It is located in Mount Vernon, Ind., on the Ohio River, 15 miles west of Evansville, Ind. This river port is in the center of one of the richest grain production areas in the world, and one of the globe's largest fertilizer markets. Extensive coal and petroleum reserves are also located in the region, as well as large tracts of commercial timber. The port also offers: 12-month access to the Gulf of Mexico through the Inland Waterway System; 745 acres with eight tenants; Foreign Trade Zone classification; Advanced material handling technologies, including a 760-foot, 60-ton bridge overhead crane; container handling equipment; and a five-ton, 50-inch electromagnet; and Storage facilities for general cargo and bulk commodities including a grain elevator with a 4.75 million bushel capacity; three 1 million gallon liquid fertilizer storage tanks; and a 85,000-ton covered facility for the storage of dry fertilizer. Accessibility Waterways - Shippers enjoy 12-month barge access to the Gulf of Mexico through the Mississippi and the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway System from the Mount Vernon port. With 7,500 feet of riverfront, the port offers experienced stevedoring and handling capabilities through Consolidated Terminals & Logistics Co. as well as Mount Vernon Barge Service, which offers tug, towing, fleeting and switching services at the port. Rail - The port is served by CSX Transportation providing access to North America's entire rail network. CSX and other private switching services offer locomotives dedicated exclusively to intraport cargo shipping. The port has 6.5 miles of track with 286,000 lbs. per car gross weight capacity and storage facilities for more than 120 rail cars. Highways - From the port , tenants and their customers have easy access to Interstate 64 and U.S. 41 via state highways 62 and 69. In addition, more than 50 trucking companies serve the Mount Vernon area. Air - The port is just 18 miles west of the Evansville Regional Airport. Five major airlines provide jet and commuter service with more than 35 flights per day to seven national hub airport locations in the United States.
