The mission and principal tasks of the Royal Danish Administration of Navigation and Hydrography Mission The Royal Danish Administration of Navigation and Hydrography is to contribute to the safety of navigation at sea in Danish, Faroese and Greenland waters. Pricipal tasks The Royal Danish Administration of Navigation and Hydrography achieves this mission through execution of the following tasks. Exercise jurisdiction and issue nautical publications The Royal Danish Administration of Navigation and Hydrography determines guidelines for buoyage, grants licences and issues orders regarding buoyage, handles cases concerning installations and work in Danish waters and cases concerning wrecks. In conjunction with the discharge of authority, mariners are regularly supplied with information via the publication of Notices to Mariners, coastal and local warnings, etc. Read more about jurisdiction and nautical publications Provide aids to navigation The Royal Danish Administration of Navigation and Hydrography establishes, operates and maintains systems and buoyage to assist in positioning and navigation in principal waters, transitroutes and to secure anchorage in accordance with the Danish legislation on safety at sea. That means establishing, operating and maintaining lights, lightbuoys, beacons, day markers and radio navigation systems as required. Read more about aids to navigation Provide coastal rescue As part of the Danish sea rescue services, the Royal Danish Administration of Navigation and Hydrography operates the Coastal Rescue Service including 21 lifeboat stations. All resources, including the boatmen with their intimate knowledge of their local environment are made available to Admiral Danish Fleet in his capacity as Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre. Read more about costal rescue Provide pilotage The Royal Danish Administration of Navigation and Hydrography is the parent Danish authority for pilotage and operates the Pilotage Authority with exclusive rights for pilotage in Danish territorial waters. The Pilotage Authority is a self-supporting and financially independent organisation, whose rates are determined by the Minister of Defence. The pilot stations provide navigators with local knowledge and expertise for shipping transiting Danish waters or calling at Danish ports. This supports safety of navigation and contributes to protect the environment. The Director General authorises pilots, grants licences and issues certificates etc. for pilotage. Read more about pilotage Conduct hydrographic surveys and provide oceanographic information The Royal Danish Administration of Navigation and Hydrography (RDANH) is responsible for hydrographic surveys in Danish, Faeroese and Greenland waters. RDANH undertakes collection of hydrographic and oceanographic data. Hydrographic surveys are carried out by Naval personnel and ships as directed by RDANH. Collected and processed data are made available to the armed services, commercial shipping, for producing charts and to regulatory bodies and other users.
