Hire Catalogue How to choose a GPS that meets your needs The Global Positioning System is a constellation of 24 satellites that orbit Earth and transmit a constant and highly reliable set of signals to all points on the planet. GPS receivers on the ground then use those signals to determine their exact location and it is the receiver type that will determine the level of accuracy you can expect to achieve. There are 3 basic levels of accuracy (or types of solutions): Autonomous 15 meters approximately Differential GPS (DGPS) Submeter (GIS) Survey Grade GPS centimeter level (Survey) 1. Standard GPS Accuracy (Autonomous): Autonomous or Standard GPS provides an accuracy range of +/-15m (x,y). This solution is designed for people who only need an approximate location on the earth, such as a boat at sea, or a hill-climber. For commercial applications (survey, mining, GIS data collection) this level of accuracy may not be sufficient. Differential GPS: Differential GPS involves cooperation between two receivers, one that wanders around (your system) and another that is stationary. The stationary receiver is the key to the accuracy of DGPS. It ties all the satellite measurements into a solid local reference. There are two options available: Beacon: Ireland and UK have 12 public DGPS transmitting stations dotted around the costline. The free service covers the Irish and UK coastal and land territory. The problems associated with terrestrial radio beacons are more pronounced due to the properties of the MF frequency. This is more susceptible to electromagnetic noise and weather conditions such as thunderstorms, atmospheric distortion, multipathing, masking and the receiver simply being beyond the range of the radio transmissions. Typically the signal is received up to 200 km away Satellite: Instead of the correction messages being sent from a beacon at ground level, they are uplinked to a satellite in geo-stationary orbit above the earth. The satellite then re-transmits the corrections which may be received by users on the Earth's surface. Survey Grade GPS RTK solution uses more of the GPS satellite signal than the autonomous or DGPS solution. The most important requirement for the RTK fixed solution is initialisation. RTK is the preferred solution for surveyors and offers accuracy of centimeter level in x,y and z. Post Processing for higher accuracy associated with control surveys.
