Saarte Liinid is active since 1 October 1994. Our main fields of activity include the maintenance and development of our harbours. First of all it means ensuring safe navigation for ferries between the mainland and the islands. Saarte Liinid handles cargo and services passengers through the ports it administers in the most agreeable way for the passengers and the most profitable for itself. This web-site will give you a general overview of Saarte Liinid and inform you of the services our harbours offer. Who are we? Saarte Liinid is landlord type and its principal tasks are to administer the harbours and to ensure the cargo and/or passengers transportation. There are ten ferry-harbours: Kuivastu , Virtsu , Heltermaa , Rohuk la , Sviby , S ru , Triigi , Kihnu , Munalaid and Manilaid . The larger ones have conditions for receiving cargo ships. Roomassaare Harbour is the largest cargo port in Saaremaa, where there are also quays for passenger ferries/ships, (oil) tankers, fishing boats, and (sailing) yachts. Ringsu Harbour is the smallest port and partly still under construction, however it is capable of servicing boats which secure Ringsu inhabitants communication with the mainland. It is also possible for other smaller boats to visit Ruhnu Harbour. Saarte Liinid headquarters, situated in Kuressase, is responsible for the general management of the company. The headquarters also organises its economical activity and plans and conducts the construction works of its harbours. Saarte Liinid is a public limited company the shares of which belong to the Republic of Estonia 100%. There are four quays for receiving vessels, and a quay for yachts. Three quays are equipped with ramps. The harbour can receive boats with maximum length of 115 meters and maximum draught of 4,3 meters. There is a portal crane: lifting capacity of 6 tons and lifting radius of 30 meters. Roomassaare Harbour has three principal tasks: Cargo harbour Passenger harbour Yacht harbour Cargo harbour is equipped with the necessary quays, cargo storage facilities, and lifting cranes for loading and unloading vessels. For receiving passenger boats the harbour has the necessary facilities for organising frontier guard- and customs formalities. Yacht harbour is separated from the main harbour, there are 60 places (floating quays) and further more approximately 100 places (stone quays). Roomassaare Harbour offers all the basic services what a passenger could need. The area of the island is 11,4 square kilometres, the closest to the mainland is Kolka cape in Kuramaa 37 kilometres. The distances from Ruhnu: Kuressaare 70 km, P rnu 96 km, Kihnu 54 km. The number of inhabitants is approximately 60. The only harbour in Ruhnu is known under the name of Ringsu. Regardless of the unfinished construction works the port offers a stopping place and a shelter to different boats. Ruhnu Island and its port has been discovered by many tourists. The first information about Kuivastu Harbour s existence dates back to 17th century. The regular connection was based on mail-boats what enabled transportation of goods and passengers. The order for the regular mail-boats came initially from the state authority of Sweden. In the 17th century the task of keeping the connection between the mainland and Muhu Island was assigned to an inn situated in Virtsu Harbour. The inn kept six men for the job and their task was to carry passengers and goods over the strait in a big boat. By 1794 Kuivastu Harbour had an operating post-station situated in a tavern. The first real post-station was built in 1835. To keep the communication, they had special type of ferryboats. It was a sailing boat wide, 10-12 meters long, open from the upper part and with a relatively small draught. During the skate-connection time Kuivastu Harbour had a wooden quay (7 feet/2,13 meters deep). In 1888 the first steamboat Sirius reached our waters. In 1902 the new ice-breaking steamer General Surovtsev (five times as powerful as the previous one) arrived in the strait. This event caused the expansion of the existing harbour. By 1903 the expansion of the quay was completed, the work was done by Jaan Schmuul from Koguva Village. From the beginning of the 1920s the navigation between the mainland and the island was organised by Balti P steselts, later Sergo & Co s coasters were added. Regardless of the efforts to make Kuivastu s Harbour deeper and to reconstruct it, they failed to organise a working connection over the strait. For example the ice-breaker J ri Vilms couldn t come to the harbour for it was too low (3,3 meters). After the Second World War the importance of Kuivastu Harbour rose. The harbour belonged to the Port of Tallinn. Immediately after the war the cargo was carried by a motor ship Merkuri and a ferry No 1. From 1955 a passenger boat called Morjak was used. In 1956 a new type of ice-breaking ferry S prus was used, thereupon Suurupi , Severodvinsk , Viimsi . It was not before 1974, when Tehumardi was put to work, when the permanent (no matter the weather) connection between Kuivastu and Virtsu was established. In 1993 the new harbour building was completed. In 1994 the administration of Kuivastu Harbour was assigned to RAS Saarte Liinid, formed by the Estonian Ministry of Transport and Communication. In the eighteenth century a net of post-stations started to develop and together with this development it was easier to organise transportation of post and passengers. The year when the first post-station was built in Virtsu is not known, but it is known to be rebuilt in 1822 (there is an old song to prove it). There were two ferryboats operating in the strain, one stood in Kuivastu the other in Virtsu. A wooden quay (7 feet/2,13 meters deep) built in the sea was the harbour (often damaged by storms and ice) at the time. In 1888 the first steamboat Sirius started operating between Virtsu and Kuivastu. In 1902 the new ice-breaking steamer General Surovtsev started working together with Sirius . General Surovtsev was run on a rock in 1918 by the Russian military forces. By 1930s regular navigation was organised between the mainland and the islands, but it failed at times because the harbour was too low for some of the boats. The ice-route remained important during the winters. The communication was organised by Sergo & Co and the operating boats were Rudolf , and Viire . As early as in 1620 the name Heltermecky first appears then it referred to a farm. From that shore it was the shortest ice-route to the mainland in the winters. In the spring, summer, and autumn the connection was kept with a help of sailing boats. In the 19th century the landlords in Hiiumaa (Ungern-Stenberg in the lead) established a regular postal communication between the mainland and the islands. A special type of sailing boat was used to carry the post. This sailing boat was a big, single-masted boat the length of which was 20 feet, and it had no deck, the crew consisted of 2-3 men. Heltermaa Harbour was built in the second half of the 19th century (1860) thanks to the local landlords. At the beginning the quay was built of stone and timber. Little by little the stone part of the quay was widened, and it was not before 1959 when the first ramp was built. During the tsarist government the first attempts to deepen the route between Heltermaa and Rohuk la were made. From the Soviet occupation Heltermaa Harbour belonged to the USSR Port of Tallinn. In 1993 AS Tallinna Sadam started to build a new harbour building for Heltermaa. In 1994 the administration of Heltermaa Harbour was assigned to RAS Saarte Liinid, formed by the Estonian Ministry of Transport and Communication. Through a tough competition AS Saaremaa Laevakompanii was elected to be responsible for organising the communication by sea for the next 10 years. Saaremaa Laevakompanii opened its P hja Liinide office in Heltermaa. In 1996, 12 December the new harbour building was opened, that modernised the working conditions and improved the servicing of the passengers. There is a hotel with a conference room, a bar with a kitchen, sauna, and rooms for communication-, customs-, and frontier guard services in the building. There are also rooms for police and first aid. In 1997 the ferries carrying people to and from Hiiumaa were sold to AS Saaremaa Laevakompanii through a contest. In 1998 the harbour started to build a new quay, in the autumn (1998) a new ferry Ofelia started working, in the summer the Heltermaa-Rohuk la route was deepened. In 1999 the new lighting system was set in the harbour, and a modern water treatment system was put in place. The quays were equipped with systems that supply ships with fresh water and electricity. The whole harbour territory got new asphalt and the traffic was reorganised. In 1208 the name Rokel is first mentioned as an ancient landing place. Rohuk la Village, then carried the name of dorpt Rhuesz and it dates back the Middle Ages. The inhabitants in the village were free Swedish peasants. The name is first mentioned in historic documents in 1524. Limestone and lime were exported. Raikk la lade (a layer of limestone) is situated near Rohuk la and the weatherproof limestone is used in construction works. The railroad that was built between Tallinn and Haapsalu was lengthened, in the beginning of the 20th century, to Rohuk la Harbour. Before the First World War the tsarist government set up a naval port and a mine fleet in Rohuk la, it was destroyed in October in 1917. The harbour had two basins: the south basin and the north basin. In 1920/1921 the harbour was restored, the railroad was built to the harbour and the port was put to use to keep the connection with the islands. After the Second World War the quay burnt down, and till 1995 only the quay in the south basin was used to communicate with Hiiumaa and Vormsi. The port belonged to the Port of Tallinn. In the beginning it was a fishing port. The connection with the mainland was kept through other harbours. In the beginning of the 30s The Republic of Estonia started a program, the purpose of which was to give work to the unemployed and to build objects vital for living. In 1933 Sviby Harbour was built. The harbour was connected with Haapsalu and later with Rohuk la Harbour. Because the conditions for navigating different kinds of boats were difficult, it was not possible to grant a regular connection. In 1960s the works for making the harbour and the routes deeper started. After the Second World War the Sviby Harbour belonged to the Port of Tallinn. In the 1980s the new harbour quay was built and that gave an opportunity to establish a ferry boat connection with Vormsi Island. In 1994 the administration of Sviby Harbour was assigned to RAS Saarte Liinid, formed by the Estonian Ministry of Transport and Communication. Till the end of the Swedish era the harbour was situated in the district of Abaja and Veski streets, later the landing place was in Tori. When the economical life got livelier in the town and the mud treatment developed, a question of necessity for a new harbour rose. A suitable place for the new harbour was 4 kilometres to south-east from Kuressaare towards Roomassaare Peninsula. Money for building it came from the tsarist government, and the construction started in 1891. The state was responsible for the job. In 1894 the work was completed. The flagship of the harbour was a steamship Konstantin (mainly covered the distance between Kuressare and Riia). The town profited from the road that went to the harbour (they collected a tax for using the road, the money went to the mayor as his salary). In 1913 the harbour was made deeper. The First World War interrupted the more significant repair- and construction works in Roomassaare Harbour. During the time when Estonia was a Republic the circulation in the harbour increased, new ferry-lines were opened. In the twenties a defence pier was needed, built in the open sea the harbour was not much of a protection and too many quays were broken. In the summer a big part of the port-users were summer guests coming to Kuressare on ferries. In 1938 the repair works of the quay started, the electrical lighting was not yet put to use in the harbour. When the war broke out, The army forces used the harbour. The harbour buildings got partly destroyed in the bombing. In 1945 the harbour was administered by the Baltic Navy, and the construction works were organised by naval construction team. In 1951 the harbour received its first 10-ton crane. In 60s and 70s the development of the port was slow, though the port was hard at work. During that period grand plans were made but only one, building an oil quay got to realisation. During the 100 years of history of Roomassaare Harbour the most exiting times start from 1991 (rebirth of Estonian Republic). Thanks to AS Tallinna Sadam financing the first stage of reconstruction of the cargo- and yacht harbours were completed. In 1994 the administration of Roomassaare Harbour was assigned to RAS Saarte Liinid, formed by the Estonian Ministry of Transport and Communication. During this time the new cargo quays were built in the harbour, the territory is widened for more cargo storage, the harbour caf and a slip building were built in the yacht harbour. In the spring of 2001 the new yacht harbour building was completed. Roomassaare Harbour, administered by AS Saarte Liinid, principal task is to process cargo, but in addition to that the yacht harbour has turned out to be one of the most frequently visited yacht harbours in Estonia. Since 1998 Roomassaare Harbour has received a badge Sinilipp that symbolises environmental friendly behaviour. According to the winds they stopped in that side of the island where they could find shelter against wind. The only wooden quay was in Limo shore, but there too the bigger boats and steamers had to stand at anchors further away from the coast. The passengers and the cargo were brought to shore in rowing boats. Ringsu cape probably had already the landing place in 1949 when the collective fishery Ruhnu was formed. The biggest step in the life of Ruhnu Island was the building of the harbour. It started in 1958/59 the unfortunate part about this is that they used the material from their old stone fences. On 15 April 1961, before the quay was ready, Ruhnu had to survive one big storm. Almost immediately after the harbour was finished in 1969 they had to survive another great storm. The damage was so big that the harbour is not even today fully reconstructed. The harbour had a place for receiving fish and a cold storage space. They had fishing boats and traps. In 1969, before the storm, they had the following things: 6 trawlers, 9 small trawlers, 10 rowing boats, 12 other boats, and traps. Since 2000 the administration of Ringsu Harbour was assigned to AS Saarte Liinid. For the season in 2001 the harbour got itself a small house with toilets, showers, and sauna for the visitors. It could receive only small boats and boats with very small draught. The bigger boats stood at anchor further away from the coast. During 1927-29 some local peasants volunteered to work and they renovated the quay. In 1935 some local men renovated the quay again. In 1941 (October) some landing forces built a new wooden disembarking quay. In 1949 S ru formed a collective fishery, the boats and fish processing took place in M rivahe. In 1953 the building of a fish-processing department started. In fishing the seining came into practice ( S ru kalur had 28 fishing boats and 13 sweep-nets). In 1955 the fish processing started in the department; fish were caught in mass for a couple of years. In 1956 the harbour canal was dug, it was funded by: 1) Hiiumaa kalakombinaat 2) USSR Mootorkalap gijaam (all collective fishery got its orders from there). 3) S ru kaluri S ru brigade (58 fishermen). In 1961 Hiiumaa 5 collective fishery groups were united and the new union was called Hiiu Kalur . The fishermen brigades stayed in the smaller harbours, but they were administered and organised in the Suursadam. In 1983 S ru Harbour had 7 boats all together. In 1984 Theodor Pruul finished his work as a fisherman and retired. In 1987 the works for deepening the individual harbour started, in 1988 the work was finished. During 1996 1998 the quays in the harbour were restored. In 1998 the ferry route was deepened.
