In doing so it offers a broad range of services depending on the tasks required. This ranges from the provision of day-to-day advice in relation to, inter alia, drafting of contracts, organisation of corporate structures, ship sale and purchase and registration, Bill of Lading / charterparty disputes and marine insurance. EMCO is also heavily involved in the conduct of arbitrations, particularly London arbitrations. On The Local Scene: Equally, EMCO’s concentration on Arab countries finds it assisting shipowners, charterers, P&I Clubs and other insurers and foreign lawyers on a daily basis in relation to claims, casualties and other problems which they may be facing in Arab countries. Having started his career at Ince & Co in London, he now has 17 years of experience in shipping, commercial and insurance disputes. He holds a Masters in Maritime Law from the University of Southampton and is the winner of the 1985 Maxwell Law Prize and 1989 Law Society Sheffield Prize. Imad is predominantly engaged in casualty investigations and management on behalf of shipowners and their P&I and H&M underwriters. He has almost 30 years experience in the shipping industry having started his career working in ship operation and management of vessels owned by the Elias family. Subsequently, prior to joining Elias Marine Consultants in December 1995, he worked as a ship agent in Egypt for 8 years where he acquired hands-on experience in ports and customs procedures and regulations. Riad works predominantly for shipowners and P&I Clubs for all types of matters in Syria, where he was born and lived. He holds both Lebanese and Syrian nationalities. Having studied Lebanese Law at Universite Saint Joseph in Beirut, Elie completed a Masters degree in International and Commercial Law at the University of Buckingham in the UK. He joined Elias Marine Consultants in July 1995 almost immediately after graduating and has been involved in most matters handled by the company, but with a particular emphasis on non-contentious cases such as ship sale and purchase, ship registration and ship finance. Elie is also the head of the company’s Corporate Division. He is fluent in Arabic, French and English and handles most of the company’s work in North African Arab countries where the use of his French proves extremely useful. Elie holds Lebanese nationality. Koula was born and completed her studies in the UK and moved to Cyprus in 1999 after graduating from the University of Leicester where she obtained an LL.B (honours) degree in Law. Prior to joining Elias Marine Consultants, Koula worked at a local law firm in Cyprus where she gained litigation experience in the Cyprus legal system. Koula deals mostly with contentious cases ranging from Hull & Machinery and P&I claims to handling FD&D disputes and arbitrations. She is fluent in both English and Greek and holds British and Cypriot nationalities. After studying Slovak Law at the University of Matej Bel of Slovakia where she obtained a Masters Degree in Law, she moved to Cyprus in 2003. In 2004 she completed a Doctorate Degree in International Law at the aforesaid university. Whilst working for a Cypriot shipowning and shipmanagement company, where she gained experience in various aspects of maritime law and the shipping industry, she passed the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers exams in 2005. In 2007 she also successfully completed a postgraduate Diploma in Maritime Law at the London Metropolitan University. Sonia predominantly handles and assists Elie Medlej in non-contentious cases. She speaks Slovak, English and Czech and holds Slovakian nationality. After spending a period at sea on Tankers and Passenger RoRo Ferries, he subsequently attended at the World Maritime University studying Technical Management in Shipping. Upon graduation in 1988, Marc joined Carenco Surveyors in Limassol as a Ship Surveyor and then joined Elias Marine Consultants in January 2004. As a surveyor, Marc performs inspections and surveys predominantly on behalf of shipowners, H&M and P&I underwriters. He is also the NK Class surveyor in Cyprus. As a marine engineer, Marc is a member of The Institute of Marine Engineering Science & Technology; The Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers, The Institute of Diagnostic Engineers, The International Institute of Marine Surveyors, The Energy Institute (through the Institute of Petroleum, U.K.) and The Cyprus Safety And Health Association as well as being a Companion of The Nautical Institute. Marc speaks Greek, English and French and holds Cypriot and French nationalities. He has since gained broad experience assisting the various Claims Executives in all types of cases. He is predominately responsible for arranging surveys for pre-purchase inspections, insurance condition surveys, and cargo condition surveys. Rony has become extremely close to the company’s shipowner clients due to his almost daily contact with them on loss prevention and risk assessment measures as well as daily FD&D type of issues. Rony is also heavily involved in assisting Riad in matters in Syria. During his time at the company, Rony has also studied and passed the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers exams. She then moved to France where she completed a Masters Degree and worked in a Fiscal Law specialized firm. She assists in contentious matters relating to dry marine and commercial disputes and arbitrations. Sarah is a Lebanese national and speaks fluent French, Arabic, English, Spanish and Italian.
