The ships' names were "Santa Maria da Candelaria", "Santa Maria da Graca", and "Assuncao". Francisco Caldeira Castelo Branco was the Captain and on January 12, 1616, they entered and conquered the territory, laying the foundations of a fortress, today called Forte do Castelo, and Nossa Senhora de Belem was the name given to that land. In the beginning of the 20th century, Belem was the largest rubber producer in the world. This increased vessels traffic and soon it became necessary to build a port as the existing small wharves were dangerous, ugly and not efficient. Therefore, Belem was to become a big city; its privileged location at the mouth of the Amazon River would guarantee a fast growing, transforming the town into an important urban center, as all commercial transportation would have to pass by its port. A businessman from Pennsylvania, U.S.A., Percival Farquhar (1864-1953), after participating in the organization of the LIGHT POWER company in Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, received authorization to start the construction of the dock of Belem. Through the Decree number 6283, dated December 20, 1906, he was granted the concession to explore the port facilities through a company called PORT of PARA Co. The construction of the Port of Belem began in 1909, when the Amazon was the largest rubber producer in the world. Percival Farquhar removed all the wharves in front of the city and in that same place he built the Port of Belem, inaugurated on October 02, 1909, with 120 meters of berthing and the first shed measuring 20 by 100 meters. Four years later, in 1913, the Port already had 1718 meters of berthing and 15 sheds. On April 27, 1940 the Law Decree 2154 created the SNAPP - Independent Administration Navigation Services of the Amazon and Management of the Port of Para, and on July 22, 1940 the Law Decree 2436 transferred to the Federal Government all port facilities of Belem. Location Latitude 01 28 03 S Longitude 48 29 18 W The Port of Belem was inaugurated on October 02, 1909 and is located at 120 km from the Atlantic Ocean. It is on the right side of the Bay of Guajara, formed by Moju, Guama, Acara and Para Rivers. It is a protected port, with practically no strong winds. At the right side of the bay one can see the Island of Oncas, 19 km long, and several other smaller islands. The access is through the Oriental (East) channel which has an average width of 90 - 180 meters, a length of 6000 meters and a draft of 9 meters when drained. The maneuvering basin is in front of the Ver-o-Peso dock and has a length of 500 meters by 500 meters of width. General Aspects Draft 7.3m LOA 180m The Port of Belem has 1,446.90 meters of berthage length. The dock structure is shaped as a continuous concavous pier and is made of single concrete blocks. Deep drafts only at the entrances of the Marechal Hermes Dock, which has 75 meters on the sides and 300 meters of length. The remaining base is made of hard clay stones, which is the constitution of the river bottom. As the average tide mark in the Port of Belem is 3.20 meters, the theu quay height is a maximum of +4.5 meters above the hydrographic zero. Cargo Operation The Port of Belem started to operate at a higher unloading than loading cargo work. In 1915, the general cargo handling was 323,003 tons, being importation more than 60% of this total figure. At that time, native rubber exportation was predominant and it was largely produced in the North of the country. Presently, the main cargoes operated are: - Timber - Wheat - Brazil nuts - Pepper - Metallic silicon In the 70's, the port started to be an exporter port and presently the largest markets are in Europe, USA and Japan, being timber, pepper, Brazil nuts, palm heart, fish and shrimp the main export goods. The main import goods are wheat, cement and food. Currently, the Port of Belem operates an average of 800,000t per year. The main cargoes are: timber, pepper, heart-of-palm, fish, shrimp, Brazil nut, and wheat. Almost all offices dealing with port operations are located within the port, such as customs, Agriculture Ministry office, IBAMA (Environmental office), Labor Ministry office, health department, State treasury office, OGMO and the Port Operators Union.
