The port of Djibouti has been leased to Dubai Port International, the international arm of the Dubai Port Authority. Under the agreement signed on May 8th 2000, Dubai Port International will manage and develop the port over a period of 20 years, eventually developing a free trade zone. Work is organised in three shifts. The Harbour Master s office ensures pilotage, towage and mooring. All cargo handling in Djibouti is done by private companies except at the container terminal which is managed by the PAID. There is a rail branch line to container terminal and container freight station. The CDE (Chemin de fer Ethio-Djiboutien) links the port of Djibouti to Ethiopia. Main facilities to be offered at Doraleh port are: Container terminal Oil terminal Oil refinery Industrial and commercial free zone Construction of a new bulk terminal with capacity for storage of 80,000 tons. The bulk (fertilizer and grains) will be handled by conveyor belt from the quay. The bulk terminal will be located at berths 14 and 15, and is designed to handle 1.2 million tons a year.
