General Information MIT started operations on April 16, 1995 at a location near the Atlantic opening of the Panama Canal immediately adjacent to the Colon Free Trade Zone (CFZ). MIT offers efficient and reliable port services to shipping lines transiting the Panama Canal or serving the Caribbean Region. MIT has direct access into the CFZ and highway access to the cities in the Republic of Panama and other Central American countries. MIT provides customers with secure, flexible, and efficient services featuring fully automated vessel and gate systems, world-class productivity, container maintenance & repair, around the clock security and on-site customer office space. MIT s highly motivated and well-trained work force of over 700 employees and modern facilities and equipment have helped make MIT both the largest and most productive container transshipment hub in Latin America. Throughout the years, MIT has garnered numerous awards, including being named one of the top 10 most efficient ports in the world by Containerization International, and for 1998 and 1999, was awarded the prize of The Port of the year for Outstanding Performance by the Caribbean Shipping Association History Click for larger image The project area, known as Coco Solo Sur was a U.S. Navy Seaplane Base during the World War II era. The base was reverted back to Panama under the Carter-Torrijos treaties of 1977. During the 80 s, the area was used as storage facility and distribution center of vehicles for Latin America. Wanting to avoid the additional costs and logistics associated with moving the cars to and from Cristobal, the owners decided to build a Ro-Ro (roll-on/roll-off) berth at their distribution/storage facility and thereby directly import and export their vehicles on site. Thus, the original concept of MIT was born. The total cost of the first phase including expenses for dredging was in excess of US$115,000,000.
