Communication is a major concern as well, and our offices are fully equipped with VHF and Internet Access. In this particular, Internet is widely implemented, allowing us to use web based applications such as Shipcall.com, providing updated information to our principals, partners and clients. True to good commercial ethics, we aim to consolidate and develop new and old business relationships worldwide throughout our companies; and also to produce the best return on investment for our shareholders" Sociedade Comercial Orey Antunes, S.A. was founded in 1886 by Mr Rui d'Orey under the name of Rui d'Orey & Cia and dedicated itself to the wholesale of iron and steel. In 1900 the company changed its name to Orey Antunes & Cia, as a result of a joint venture with Mr. Antunes dos Santos who approached Mr. Rui d'Orey to start a Shipping Agency business. During the first half of the twentieth century, the Orey family diversified its business activities showing extraordinary entrepreneurial qualities. The founder of the company and his brothers, whom he invited to join the company, were involved in several successful ventures in different fields from hydroelectric power production to fishing and automobile representation for Peugeot and Packard. Mr. Vasco d Orey, took over the company from his father and developed it further. He invested in the cod fishing industry with Empresa de Pesca de Viana do Castelo, S.A. and founded, together with one associate, the Viana do Castelo Shipyard, Estaleiros Navais de Viana do Castelo, S.A. , where many of the fishing vessels of that time were built. The technical know-how acquired in those days is still present within the Group in its technical companies. In the 70 s, together with Koninklijke Rotterdamsche Lloyd, the Group built a Hotel in the Algave, Hotel da Balaia, S.A. . This and other investments suffered with the Portuguese revolution of 1974 and some were even nationalized. The Group was also at the origin of many profitable businesses like SPC Servico Portugues de Contentores SA , which explores container terminals and is involved in stevedoring. As shipowners the group founded ECN Companhia Continental de Navegacao, S.A. which owned and managed bulk carriers, and Portwal Transportes Maritimos Portugal Africa, Lda. that was involved in the traffic between northern Europe and the west coast of Africa. In 1980 / 1981, Sociedade Comercial Orey Antunes, S.A. became the holding company of the group with each activity transferred to a dedicated subsidiary. Subsequently it became listed in the Lisbon Stock Exchange.Because of the many changes in the world economy and specially after Portugal joined the European Union, the group went through many changes. It invested in new fields and sold other ventures like SPC and ECN.
