In the face of the restructuring-difficulties in world fisheries sector such as the announcement of the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea and the proclamation of the EEZ by each coastal state etc., we have been playing an important role as one of the prominent deep sea fishing countries in the world. Recognizing the responsibility of leading fishing industry, Korea's deep sea fishing industry has been doing its best to implement regional and international commitments for the effective conservation and management of living marine resources and the sustainable utilization of them through close tie and amicable cooperation with coastal states and international bodies. Although fishing conditions, caused by the surge of fishing access fee, the decrease of fishing grounds and the intensification of fishing regulation etc., are ever worsening, Korea`s deep sea fishing industries will go forward to complete our utmost task, contributing to national food and export industry. In order to contribute to the industry, we, Korea Deep Sea Fisheries Association, promise you to do our best to strengthen the cooperation with coastal states and international organizations and carry out self-restructuring task through ceaseless technological innovation and business rationalization Korea made the first trial fishing operation of tuna longliner successful in the Indian Ocean in 1957, and after then with short history of about 40 years, we have accomplished a remarkable development by the positive and efficient support of the government to the deep sea fishery portion and also by the enthusiastic participations of deep sea fisheries industries. The capacity of fishing vessels, less than 100 vessels in early 1960?, had greatly expanded up to 850, setting the highest record in the history in the latter part of 1970?. Even in the view of production? regard, it was far less than 100,000M/T at first in 1960?, but it had increased almost up to 500,000M/T in the latter part of 1970?. Export also 20 millionUS$ only in 1960?, but it had grown remarkably that it exceeded 300 millionUS$ in the latter part of 1970?. Despite considerable difficulties encountered due to the declaration of 200 miles exclusive economic zone by coatal states, oil shock, decline in fish prices, extension of fishing restraints on the high - seas and many others which rushed into from the latter part of 1970?, deep sea fisheries have made their vigorous fishing activities and showed the potential strengh of achieving 580,000M/T in production and 414,478,000USD in export for the year of 2002. 482 fishing vessels are rendering the utmost efforts for the national wealth and the development of food resource with exertion of over 10,000 crew, centered at 25 bases over the world. Our industry endeavoring for the promotion of crews?welfare, is much more exerting our efforts for the exploitation of new fishing ground, replacement of outworn vessels with new ones together with the management rationalization and improvement of financial sturcture, fully concentrating to the increase of production and export of fish products for the national economy taking into account the resources and environmental factors. Korea signed Fisheries Agreements with 13 coastal states as of the end of 2002 to get licenses by direct fee-paying operations and by joint-venture cooperations. Korea is expediting to support the economic cooperations including the invitation of fishermen trainees and dispatches of specialists from and to the coastal states. Countries signed Fisheries Agreements with Korea are Japan, Australia, Iran, France, Kiribati, Solomon, Cook, Tuvalu, Mauritania, Ecuador, Russia, Papua New Guinea and China. Besides, the countries in which Korean vessels are operating or under planning for the operation of Korean vessels either in direct fishing or joint venture cooperation method are New Zealand, Surinam, Guinea, Oman, Mashall, Angola, Mexico, Nauru, FSM, Gabon, England(Falklands), Indonesia, Peru, Uruguay and Madagascar.
