Hitachinaka Port, which is rapidly becoming an international port hub with a state-of-the-art marine container terminal, has combined with the Kita-Kanto Expressway system linking Tochigi and Gunma Prefectures to create a new distribution network bridging East Japan. This network is expected to make a huge contribution to the rational development of cargo distribution in the region surrounding metropolitan Tokyo. Construction started in July 1989, and the cargo area on the North Wharf was opened in December 1998, with the overseas cargo terminal of the North Wharf following in April 2000. Offshore construction also began on the domestic cargo area of the Central Wharf in February 2001. This project is progressing smoothly. An international marine container terminal equipped with a deep-sea quay and the latest state-of-the-art cargo handling system. The North Wharf Public Container Terminal began operations in April 2000 and is equipped with quay (350 meters in length and with a sea depth of 15 meters) for handling large container vessels, two over-panamax gantry cranes, a fumigation warehouse and maintenance shops. This facility functions as a state-of-the-art container terminal by using an efficient transfer crane chassis loading system. The Gateway to East Japan Construction of the Kita-Kanto Expressway (approximately 150km in length) that intersects the Joban, Tohoku and Kanetsu Expressways, which has linked Hitachinaka Port with Ibaraki, Tochigi and Gunma Prefecture, thus forming a major highway network. Once each of these section has opened, access time from the Hitachinaka Port Interchange to Utsunomiya City in Tochigi Prefecture will be approximately 70 minutes, and about two hours to Takasaki City in Gunma Prefecture. Expectations are high for Hitachinaka Port to develop into the Gateway to East Japan and bridge the gap for all forms of transportation between land and sea. An import promotion area has attracted Japan's major distribution companies. The area that surrounds Hitachinaka Port was designed as an import promotion area; Foreign Access Zone (FAZ) in August 2000. In December of the same year, the Hitachinaka FAZ Distribution Site (7,440 square meters of warehouse area) began operation in the domestic cargo area of the North Wharf. This facility houses Mitsubishi Logistics Corp., Maruzen Showa Unyu Co., Ltd., Toyo Wharf & Warehouse Co., and Nippon Express Co., Ltd., and carries out freight disposal and storage and distribution processing. In addition, a total of nineteen distribution companies have set up operation in the plots and leased areas behind the North Wharf as of January 2002, while other new warehouses and distribution facilities continue to be constructed.
