In 1972, Jiles T. Lynch, a Certified Boiler Inspector with 29 years of experience, established B&D Marine and Industrial Boilers, Inc. Mr. Lynch was President and General Manager until his death in 1985. At its origin, the company had four employees that serviced, repaired and inspected marine boilers. Today B&D is a well-established firm, with the reputation of having technical expertise and experienced personnel that service corporations and governments worldwide. Our extensive capabilities are supported by our expansive facilities. The success of our Preventative Maintenance Instruction(PMI), Code and Level I systems is directly related to our emphasis on planning and control. B&D's Inventory Control Department occupies a 12,000-square-foot building that was specifically designed to house, maintain and efficiently allocate necessary tools, material and equipment needed to perform major repairs, overhauls and modernizations of main propulsion boilers. In addition, B&D has a complete nondestructive testing facility, pier-side facilities, and a 10,000 square foot operations building in which fabrication, machining and preparations are conducted. B&D has accomplished repairs in accordance with NAVSEA standard items and applicable documents on all classes of naval ships and crafts. In the continental U.S., we have provided service ports in Charleston, Boston, Mayport, Norfolk, Jacksonville and Texas, to name a few. Internationally, we have had teams in Pakistan, Turkey, Taiwan, Thailand and Egypt. Over the years, B&D has expanded its capabilities by offering an array of services including ASNT Certified Inspectors (NDT), high-pressure waterblasting, certified ASME/Nat'l Board Code welding, a vital 24-hour Emergency Service and quality boiler repairs. Our trained personnel have many years of experience in their specialized fields, including certified boiler and welding inspectors. B&D is a fully integrated, experienced and highly responsive contractor. It is not a rarity for a B&D Tiger Team to arrive and begin working in a foreign country within 48 hours of a solidified contract. B&D crews are prepared to sail with the ship to accomplish the repair. B&D is qualified to reconstruct waterwall refractory and rebrick fireboxes, including the replacement of burner tiles, plastic refractories, insulating firebrick and castables. We can also perform permanent and temporary casing and other structural repairs. We rebuild and re-face seats and plates by welding and machining to job specifications. We are equipped to handle the disassembly, renewal and re-assembly of the superheater, desuperheater, generating, screen and side-wall or rear-wall tubes. We are accustomed to working in difficult-access locations to plug and re-roll leaky tubes, repair weld cracks and leaks, replace economizer elements and U-bends, and reinstall all interference. We have the dies and tube-bending equipment to facilitate fast and accurate replacement of individual tubes, as well as complete tube bundles. We conduct post-repair inspections, hydrostatic testing and will assist in the instruction, testing and operation of revitalized systems. B&D welders are certified in all phases of welding for marine boiler repair. We have in-depth experience in sub-arc, gas-shielded arc, MIG, TIG and flux-core welding systems. We perform ultrasonic, magnetic-particle, radiographic, visual and liquid-penetrant testing to measure the uniformity of new welds and to check for defects in old welds. Our own welding inspectors are often present on the job to maintain consistent welding quality. B&D stocks all the necessary gasket materials and parts for the repair of heat, air and pressure leaks, caused by the deterioration of metal casing and boiler doors. We are experienced in the repair and replacement of piping for steam, water and various other fluids, including Level I Systems. We stock both threaded and weld-type pipe and fittings. With the application of various pumps in conjunction with calibrated gauges and preset relief valves, we are able to detect strength or tightness defects. Typical of these tests would be hydrostatic testing of boilers, superheaters, desuperheaters and economizers, as well as heat exchangers and piping systems, as specified by A.B.S., U.S. Navy and U.S. Coast Guard. B&D pioneered the use of high-pressure waterblasting for the cleaning, repair and testing of marine boiler systems. High-pressure waterblasting can be used effectively up to 10,000 psi. Typical applications include: cleaning boiler water and firesides; cleaning CHT systems; removing heavy rust and scale from exterior and interior hull surfaces; unclogging pipe and drain lines; and cleaning ID heat-exchanger tubing, to name a few. B&D crews are qualified to visually inspect for defective tubing in air conditioning and refrigeration systems, and in heat exchangers and condensers. Often, we re-roll, plug or replace defective tubes, as required; manufacture tube sheets, and completely re-tube, when necessary. We maintain a broad inventory of standard tube sizes and materials, as well as a wide variety of tube material.
